(from Spiritual jazz) During the 1960s in the United States, the civil rights movement was occurring, causing societal change and political movements. As a result, African-American people gained more freedom to celebrate their culture and to express themselves religiously. This led to a desire to push the conventions of jazz, with some artists choosing to search for transcendence and spirituality in their music.
(from Prom King) In contrast to DeRobertis' previous Saint Pepsi work, which had vaporwave and heavily-sampled elements, Prom King is a pop album in which DeRobertis' sings instead of only sampling vocals. As well, DeRobertis uses real instruments in a way that imitates sampling.
(from Ludwig's subathon) On March 14, 2021, American livestreamer Ludwig Ahgren began continuously livestreaming on Twitch. The livestream ended on April 13, 2021, after 31 days. [...] Nathan Grayson of Kotaku called the livestream "one of Twitch's most consistent and comforting presences". Peter Marsh of ABC News compared the stream to a high school sleepover, and said the stream "developed a life of its own, with in-jokes, memes and characters", while Bijan Stephen of The Verge wrote, "It's incredible to me that [...] Twitch still has its own distinct culture and its own set of stars who seem to do stunts like this just because they seem cool".
(from Don't Wake Me Up) The release of Don't Wake Me Up gave Phil Elverum a small following, and according to Ian Gormely of Exclaim!, was the "first time Elverum [was] able to connect with an audience". According to Love Rock Revolution by Mark Baumgarten, the release of the album "set a new precedent for [K Records]" since Elverum's production was perceived as high-quality despite the studio's recording limitations. Baumgarten wrote that Don't Wake Me up was "praised for its production rather than accepted despite it". The album gave K Records a greater trust in Elverum's musical abilities.
(from Lancaster Smokehouse) Between 1992 and 1994, there were a series of four fires which resulted in the building being completely renovated. During this period, Mike Kelly owned the building. The first fire, in February 1992 was caused by a cigarette; the second, in May 1992, was thought to be caused by light bulbs and destroyed the tavern's top floor. Both the third and fourth fires were arsons: they occurred in February 1993 and July 1994. The Tavern continued to operate as a bar and Dixieland jazz venue.
(from $456,000 Squid Game in Real Life!) Donaldson received criticism from some journalists and the wider online public for a perceived misunderstanding of Squid Game's anti-capitalist themes. Jackson called the video "perverse" and a "recreation of the villain's ultimate desire to watch desperate people compete for money purely for his amusement". According to Silberling, the video lacked the "emotional resonance and suspense" of the show because the contestants faced no risk of punishment for losing
(from No Highs) The album's liner notes discussed ambient music's place in the modern era. The notes read "[the album] serves as a beacon of unease against the deluge of false positive corporate ambient currently in vogue". The album is Hecker's reaction to this "soothing", corporate ambient, as shown in the album's anxious and fretful sound. The album was also seen as a response to the rise of ambient music on streaming services, which, according to The Guardian, "[threatens to] reduce ambient to a genre of convenience".
