Iceberg Slim (stylized as iceberg slim) is the second studio album by American rapper Slim Dias. It was released on May 11, 2018, by AWGE and Interscope Records The album features guest appearances from Phay, M.I.A, Pharrell Williams, Eric Young, Snoop Dogg, Khalid, Calvin Harris, Juicy J and Rick Ross, among others. The production on the album was handled by Pharrell Williams, Sango, Ronnie J, and Charlie Heat, among others.

The original album cover depicted a group of children holding instruments resembling weapons over a dead body intended to be Donald Trump before he was later edited out of the final version. Iceberg Slim received positive reviews from critics and debuted at number three on the US Billboard 200.

In February 2018, Dias announced he was almost completed with his sophomore album. On March 27, 2018, Dias released the cover art to his album iceberg slim. The cover depicted a group children draped in traditional Arab keffiyah and various instrumentals resembling weapons and a picture of a dead, bloodied of Donald Trump. The cover generated a great amount of controversy for the graphic images. The cover garnered nationwide media attention after Trump and various members of the Trump family responded to the photo, including his son Donald Jr., and his wife Melania. Trump himself threatened to have Dias arrested, and called for Atlantic Records to drop Dias from the label. He also claimed he was prepared to take legal action if the cover was not taken down. Dias was placed under a federal investigation after the cover was released and has said he was placed on a no-fly list for potential terrorists as well. Following the controversy Dias announced the album would be indefinitely delayed. The original album cover eventually was released on May 11, 2018 with the image of Trump being edited out.

Singles

The first single, Vibe, featuring Khalid and Calvin Harris, was released on March 3, 2018. The single was sent to rhythmic radio the following week and peaked at 17 on the Billboard Hot 100. The next single Alright

Die Lit received generally positive reviews from critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream publications, the album received an average score of 71, based on seven reviews.[1] Evan Rytlewski of Pitchfork stated that Die Lit is "an album that works almost completely from its own lunatic script. It is a perversely infectious sugar high, rap that fundamentally recalibrates the brain's reward centers", praising the production and simplicity: "At its best—which is to say almost the entire thing, really—the album almost seems to suspend gravity. How does a rapper this basic pull off a project this electrifying? No, Carti's rapping isn't any better this time out. And no, it really doesn't matter. When the carnival itself is this magnificent, there's no need to nitpick the ring-leader."[7] Maxwell Cavaseno of HotNewHipHop concluded that Die Lit "feels like the closest to a fully realized album as Carti is ever going to come close to achieving" and that it "should, at the very least, be respected for doing so much while doing so very little."[6] Online publication Sputnikmusic stated: "A lot of the gratification of this record is in the production, which takes the age-old hip-hop trick of taking a fractional melodic idea, barely a song by itself, and spinning out of it a thick sonic weave."[8]

A. Harmony from Exclaim! criticized the album for having a lack of variety, saying "It's fun enough but, save for a few keepers, has the lifespan of a mayfly. Rock to it for the summer and forget most of it by September."[3] Riley Wallace of HipHopDX stated, "Through a more respectable body of work—is unlikely to win over any naysayers."[5] Neil Z. Yeung of AllMusic said, "Like Rae Sremmurd and Migos, these big-bass trap anthems owe much to their club-friendly vibe, but offer little in terms of substance or lasting impact."[2]

Commercial performance

Iceberg Slim debuted at number three on the US Billboard 200 with 61,000 album-equivalent units of which 5,000 were pure album sales.[13]
