Group Captain Terence John Arbuthnot, CdeG, OStJ (October 8 1906December 31 1995) was a highly decorated British airman.

Early Life

The son of Major John Bernard Arbuthnot, MVO., by his spouse Olive, daughter of Sir Henry Arthur Blake, GCMG., Governor of Hong Kong at the time of the acquisition of the New Territories. Terence was educated at Eton College, Berkshire.[1] [2]

Career

He served in the Royal Air Force, fighting in the Mohmand Operations in 1933 and the North-West Frontier, 1935 where he was mentioned in Despatches. Between 1936 and 1937, he took part in the Waziristan Campaign. His creation of a mobile donkey-borne radio pack was adopted as a standard medium of communication. During the Second World War he served in France, again being mentioned in Despatches. [3] [4]

He was decorated with the Croix de guerre[5] [6] and reached the rank of a Group Captain. He was honoured as Officer of the Order of Leopold of Belgium[7] [8] (Belgium's highest military honour)and was invested as a Officer of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. [9]

After the RAF he largely worked for veterans in the RAF Benevolent Fund.

Marriage

He married, April 20, 1937, in India, Karin Gunborg (d. June 19, 1983), daughter of Carl Adolph Sundgren, of Hudiksvall, Sweden. [10] They had three children, two daughters and one son.

He died, aged 89, in Kensington, London.
