Tennis or lawn tennis is currently part of the Summer Olympic Games program, and has been intermittently since the 1896 Summer Olympics. It was eventually dropped after the 1924 Summer Olympics because of an ongoing dispute between the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Tennis Federation over allowing amateur players to compete.[1] It was formally reinstated in the 1988 Summer Olympics following two appearances as a demonstration sport, and a Mixed doubles event was added at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Ever since the 2004 Summer Olympics, results from the Olympics have counted towards both ATP and WTA world rankings. A gold medal in singles is particularly sought after by high-profile players as they wish to complete a 'Career Golden Slam' - only two players have done this thus far, Steffi Graf (1988) and Serena Williams (2012).
