George H. Wirt (November 28, 1880 – November 8, 1961) was an American Forester, First Administrator of the Penn State Mont Alto Forestry Academy, and the first Chief Fire Warden of Pennsylvania.

George H. Wirt was born in MceVtywon, Pennysvlnaia on November 28, 1880.
Schooling edit
During his academic career, George Writ would attend Juniata College as a student of engineering. In 1891 he would graduate with a Bachelor of Engineering. However, after a discussion with Joseph Rothrock (who was a friend of George Wirt's father), he would become a student of Biltmore Forest Schoolwhere he would graduate from in 1901 with a Bachelor of Forestry.
Career edit
After revving his degree, George Wirt would work a state forester in Pennsylvania under the leadership of Joseph Rothrock. By 1903, Rothrock would hire Wirt as the first administrator of Mont Alto Forestry Academy. As adminsitaor, Wirt would base the school's curriculum around the model's being used in Germany. Wirt would leave the academy in 1910, to accept a job in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania as a forest inspector for the Pennsylvania Department of Forestry. While in this position, Wirt would be assigned to draft legislation in 1913 that was centered around the protection of forest lands, which were presented to the state legislator in 1915.
In the fall of 1915 Wirt would become the Chief Fire Warden of Pennsylvania. During his time in the position, he would hire 4,400 fire wardens and 30,000 crew members. As Chief Fire Warden the loss of forest lands form fires would decrease by an average of half a million acres per year to about 25,000 acres a year. Wirt would retire from the potion in 1946.
Contributions to Forester edit
George Wirt was a member of the Society of American Foresters, serving on several committees for the organization. He was also a member of the conservation movement, both during his career and in his retirement. He wrote several articles and delivered public lectures on the subject throughout his life.
