Capricorn (♑︎) is the tenth astrological sign in the zodiac out of twelve total zodiac signs, originating from the constellation of Capricornus, the horned goat. It spans the 270–300th degree of the zodiac, corresponding to celestial longitude. Under the tropical zodiac, the sun transits this area from about December 21 to January 21 the following year, and under the sidereal zodiac, the sun transits the constellation of Capricorn from approximately January 16 to February 16. In astrology, Capricorn is considered an earth sign, negative sign, and one of the four cardinal signs. Capricorn is said to be ruled by the planet Saturn[1].

There appears to be a connection between traditional characterisations of Capricorn as a sea goat and the Sumerian god of wisdom and waters, who also had the head and upper body of a goat and the lower body and tail of a fish. Later known as Ea in Akkadian and Babylonian mythology, Enki was the god of intelligence (gestú, literally "ear"), creation, crafts; magic; water, seawater and lakewater (a, aba, ab).

In Hindu astrology, the equivalent of Capricorn is Makara, the Crocodile.

Personality

Out of the twelve zodiac signs, Capricorns are one of the most ambitious and dedicated signs such that they are often perceived as judgmental and over analytical[2]. Despite this, Capricorns are valued because of their strong virtue of loyalty to their friends, family and occupation[3]. Additionally their loyalty to their occupation is driven by a workaholic mindset, as their own personal success is very important to them and seeks validation in their status [4]. In a team, the Capricorns will typically be very self-reliant and be focused on the objective/goals of the assignment [2]. As a result, group assignments can also be difficult because of their need to succeed and inability to tolerate those who stand in their way. Other signs that Capricorns work well with in group settings are those who are said to appreciate Capricorns' work-driven attitude, like Taurus' (astrology) and Virgo's (astrology) both of which are earth signs, as well [3]. Water signs like Cancer (astrology), Scorpio (astrology) and Pisces (astrology) also mesh with Capricorns personality [3]. People who you may know of that are Capricorns by birth are Dolly Parton (January 19), Michelle Obama (January 17), Betty White (January 17), Bradley Cooper (January 5), Alexander Hamilton (January 11), and Ted Cruz (December 22) [5].
