Open Access in North America presents a varied picture, including the United States with the most open depositories and journals globally, national funding mandates and open access legislations.

In 2015 North America topped the world rankings with the highest regional internet pentration rate (86.9%) which has created an enabling environment for the development of open access digital repositories and e-journal interfaces in the region.[1]

In OpenDOAR there are 571 from North America open access repositories registered, 470 in the USA, 72 in Canada and 29 in Mexico.

In DOAJ, USA tops the open access journals list with a total of 1,059 indexed journals.

Open access policies edit

As of September 2015 ROARMAP registers 128 institutional open access policies from the USA, 27 from Canada and 3 from Mexico.[1]
