Biography

edit

1993–2010: Early life

edit

Hwayoung was born on 22 April 1993 in Gwangju, South Korea.[2] Her twin sister, Ryu Hyoyoung, was a former label-mate, and is a member of Coed School and 5dolls. Hwayoung is the younger of the two, with a minute's difference between them.

2010–2011: T-ara

edit

Hwayoung was added into T-ara in July 2010 as their seventh member.[3] She was scouted after she and her sister made an appearance on SBS's variety show Star King. Both of them were then recruited into Core Contents Media, debuting in T-ara and Coed School respectively.

She participated in the collaboration between Davichi and T-ara for "우리 사랑했잖아" (We Fell In Love) in December 2011. [4]. She also participated in the writing of the rap lyrics of 사랑은 다 그런거래요 (Love is All the Same) by fellow labelmate Yangpa. [5]

2012: Contract termination and Twitter "bullying"

edit

On July 28, 2012, several members of T-ARA made public tweets that were apparently derisive references to Hwayoung. An official announcement regarding these tweets and a "major announcement about T-ARA" was made July 30th, which revealed Hwayoung would no longer be a member of the group. She is now unsigned from Core Contents Media without further say of what will happen to her career as an idol. Following the announcement of her abrupt contract termination with Core Contents Media, evidence and suggestion of the her experiencing severe bullying by the other members of T-ARA since she joined the group surfaced throughout the web and the media, sparking immense interest and controversy[6]. Much of the public strongly believes that Hwayoung was mistreated by the members of T-ARA and her agency, and has led to T-ARA's fan community to have a scheduled shut down[7], as well as suspension of the members' activities[8][9] and a huge loss of the group's popularity.[10] The official fan page of T-ara changed their page title to "HwaYoung Advocates" after the announcement by CCM. [11]

On August 1, 2012, it was reported that the CEO of Core Contents Media said via Twitter late Monday night that he may reverse the decision of firing Hwayoung if she "apologizes for her actions, I will discuss the possibility of her return with my staff and with the members of T-ara. Before that happens, it is important that she accepts responsibility for what she has done."[12]
