Glenn Angeles Bautista (born March 20, 1947) is a multi-awarded Filipino visual artist noted for his proficiency in drawing, innovations in technique and surrealist visions. He was one of the recipients of the Thirteen Artists Award of the Cultural Center of the Philippines in 1974, and in 2005 was nominated for the honour of National Artist of the Philippines in the visual arts category.

Bautista has participated in numerous art exhibitions and competitions in the Philippines and abroad. The range of his artistic production reflect his broad interest in the visual arts: paintings and drawings in various media, collages, airbrush murals, street rubbings, bas-reliefs, cut-outs, sculptures, lithography, photography, videography, digital and net art, and architectural design.

The development of Bautista’s art from its beginnings until 1995 is extensively documented and appraised by renowned Filipino art critic Alice Guillermo in her monograph, The Uncommon Art of Glenn Bautista.

Life and career

edit

Bautista was born in Orion, Bataan, a province in Central Luzon, Philippines to Ignacio Pinpin Bautista, a church minister, and Eugenia Buenaventura Angeles, a deaconess. The seventh of nine children, Bautista was raised in the faith tradition of the United Methodist Church.

Bautista first studied fine arts at the University of Santo Tomas, and later at the University of the Philippines where he was a consistent university scholar . He completed a certificate course in advertising in UP in 1969. In 1971, he graduated with honors and received his bachelor’s degree in fine arts at the Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara, California, USA . From 1980 to 1985, he lived in Germany and attended the Staatliche Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf top study lithography.

Bautista began his career in painting in 1965 when he won the top prize in the International Christmas Art Competition sponsored by the New York-based World Literacy and Christian Literature organization. His winning work, “The Event”, bested 64 other entries from all over the world and was exhibited at the 1964/1965 New York World’s Fair. The exhibition and the reproduction of his artwork on Christmas cards motivated Bautista to pursue painting as a career. He credits his father, who encouraged him to join the competition, for opening the way to his lifelong vocation. [cyberj]
