In 1755 Carver joined the Massachusetts colonial militia at the start of the French and Indian War. In 1757, Carver a friend of Robert Rogers, enlisted with Burke's Rangers. Burke's Rangers would in 1758 become a part of Rogers' Rangers. During the war he studied surveying and mapping techniques. He was successful in the military and eventually became captain of a Massachusetts regiment in 1761. Two years later he quit the army with a determination to explore the new territories acquired by the British as a result of the war.

Most {cite}of these were provincial units that were recruited as standard infantry companies from a particular region and then designated as rangers by regimental commanders or by the nature of their deployments. However, these units served only for one particular campaign (usually 9 months). However, such companies were probably not referred to as 'rangers' by contemporaries and certainly weren't permanent ranger units on the British military establishment such as Rogers' and Gorham's corps were--and who were raised to be permanent units and receive special training and equipment. Other similar New England provincial units designated as rangers were really just provincial companies assigned to reconnaissance work to free up regulars for conventional fighting. These would include, in addition to Burke's, the Massachusetts companies of Peter West (1757), Abel Keene (1757-8), Ebenezer Learned (1757-8), and Jonathan Carver (1757-8), as well others from Connecticut, including the company of John Durkee (1757-8), and still others from Rhode Island, David Wall (1757-8), among numerous others, including New York and New Jersey provincial units.</ref>
Massachusetts had learned that her best policy was to raise the usual forces at the commencement of the year, without waiting the requests of defenceless towns and almost abandoned garrisons. Such was the course she pursued in the year 1757. In addition to the colony's garrison troops, "one hundred men were employed on the eastern frontier, and forty-five under a captain and lieutenant, on the west side of Connecticut river, to Range the woods north of Falltown." The latter company — known as Rangers — under the command of Capt. John Burk,† were stationed at Hinsdale's fort, on the east bank of the Connecticut. During the month of March they made frequent marches through the neighboring country for the purpose of discovering concealed Indians. Their course was sometimes along the main stream of West river, and again by its south or west branches. Not unfrequently they ascended to the top of West river mountain, there to watch for the smoke of the enemy's camp fires. Orders were given to the Commissary General to provide these scouting parties with snow-shoes and moccasins, the better to enable them to perform their toilsome labor.

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture trade and Consumer Potection is a department in the executive branch of the Government of Wisconsin. It is responsible for regulating agriculture and implementing and overseeing the agricultural development programs for Wisconsin through consultation and technical assistance. It also administered the distribution of federal agricultural assistance programs to local farms.
