Travel destinations of Korean tourists

The number of Korean domestic tourists has increased since 2010. The number of people who participated in domestic travel (which includes one day trips) was about 238.3 million (in 2015). It increased by 4.9% compared to 2014 (227.1 million).[1] In 2014, Korean's domestic tourism expenditure was ₩14.4 trillion.[2]

Also, Korean oversea tourists are keep increasing since 2010. From 2012 to 2014, the number of people travelling overseas has risen by about 8.2% on average. In 2014, number of Korean oversea tourists was about 16.1 million. And Korean oversea tourism expenditure was $19,469.9 million.[3]

History of Korean tourists

In the past, South Korea was not likely to travel overseas due to the Korean War and the difficult economic situation. And the passport was issued narrowly under the strict supervision such as government affairs, technical training and so on. Since the 1960s, overseas travel restriction or regulation ways have been continuously reviewed to prevent foreign currency waste from traveling abroad. However, since the 1980s,The liberalization of international travel has begun to take place in catering to the globalization of national life. Since then, Koreans have been able to travel freely abroad.[4]

The modern people are living busy lives.There are more and more people traveling around alone, becoming unable to mediate vacations with family or friends.The increase in one-person households contributes to the growing number of alone tourists. Therefore, the popularity of near destination is increasing as the busy modern people can go on during a short vacation alone. According to the results of the plane ticket analysis in 2016, the top korean tourist destinations in foreign country are 1st is Osaka, 2nd is Bbangkok, and 3rd is Tokyo.pectively. Both Japan and Thailand are close and safe countries. Osaka, Tokyo, and Shanghai in China are also have a high re-visit rate to Koreans. However, Europe such as London, Paris, and Rome have fallen in re-visit rating. Because of geographical conditions, expensive air fares and high prices.[5]

The reason for sightseeing in Seoul

The population of South Korea is 51,687,682.Among them, the population of Seoul is 9,981,673.As many people gather, there are many job openings or cultural spaces such as festivals, performances, shopping places, and tourist attractions in Seoul. The reason why people are going to travel to Seoul is they can enjoy various cultural activities.[10] Due to the metropolitan area centralization of cultural infrastructure, there is a wide gap between interregional. According to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, cultural infrastructure such as the public library, museum, art galleries are 492 numbers in Gyeonggi(19.0%), 356 numbers in Seoul(13.7%), 97 numbers in Incheon(3.7%). 36.4 percent of the total cultural infrastructure is concentrated in the metropolitan area. 'Assuming that the art index is 100% in Seoul, Ulsan is 4.4%. Busan, which has the largest population in province, is 17.7%. Compared to Seoul, provincial cultural and artistic activities are remarkably low.[11] Like this, there is a great cultural gap between the center and the countryside, so many people travel to Seoul to enjoy these things.


The reason for sightseeing in Busan

The population of South Korea is 51,687,682. Among them, the population of Busan is 3,557,716. Busan is the second most populated area in Korea. And it is the Korea's second city. Also, the eastern part and south part of Busan abut onto the sea. Therefore, Busan has abundant tourist attractions such as beach and hot spring.[12] Summer in Korea is very hot due to the influence of the North Pacific high pressure. So, people in our country visit lots of Busan Beach in the hot summer.[13] The government plans to develop Busan as an international tourism area through active tourism development. So, Busan sea festival is held every August with Busan's beaches as the center. Also 11 festivals are held grandly every year, including local festivals and arts events. Also, Busan holds the Busan International Film Festival every October and is developing this as an international film festival. And the Jagalchi Cultural Tourism Festival in Busan developed into a representative cultural tourism festival in Korea.[14] Because of these various festivals and places, many people travel to Busan. Another reason why people go to Busan for sightseeing is the influence of SNS(Social Network Service. Modern people have a lot of interest in SNS. Uploaded to the SNS popular travel sites, popular restaurants, and popular models have a lot of influence on us. The official facebook of the Busan Culture and Tourism Ministry and official blog sites are promote the tourist attractions in Busan.[15] There are also many tourists who go to Busan through these promotion.

What about domestic destinations? Why are Koreans going to 1st Seoul, 2nd Busan?
