The Manchinha Case, also known as the Carrefour Dog Case, refers to the death of the stray dog ​​named Manchinha, which occurred on November 28, 2018, 2018, in the vicinity of one of the Carrefour stores, located in the Brazilian municipality of Osasco. , in Greater São Paulo. In November 2018, the owners of the Carrefour store, located in Osasco, were notified that they would receive a visit from one of the head office supervisors. One of the establishment's employees, responsible for site security, received orders to remove a mixed breed dog, called Manchinha, which remained in the Hypermarket parking lot and had been abandoned months before the incident, receiving food and water. To carry out the orders, the man would have offered the animal mortadella with rat poison, in addition to beating it, using an aluminum bar. The store claimed that Manchinha was the victim of being run over, but later admitted to the aggression. The dog was rescued by employees of the Zoonosis center in the city, but died after being attacked. The veterinarian who assisted him concluded that the animal died from bleeding.

The security guard responsible for the crime was identified and removed from his activities. The case took three days to be reported to the authorities. He confessed to the crime, declaring himself repentant. Upon completion of the investigation, on December 18, 2018, the employee was found guilty of the crime of abuse and mistreatment of animals. However, he was not arrested immediately, responding in freedom.

Repercussion

Social media immediately publicized the case, which led to a wave of protests against chain stores across Brazil. Several well-known people, such as Tatá Werneck and Luciano Huck, released statements on social networks contesting the case. Luisa Mell, presenter and activist, launched a complaint against the business. Several store employees were called to testify during an investigation by the São Paulo Civil Police to determine the reasons for the animal's death.

Legacy

Manchinha received several tributes after his death. In February 2019, the case served as a justification for the proposal of stricter laws to the crime of

animal abuse. The National Congress approved PL 1,095/2019, increasing the penalty and fine for those responsible for mistreatment of animals, from two to five years, with a maximum fine of one thousand minimum wages. In September 2020, President Jair Bolsonaro signed the bill into law, making it a legal requirement, Manchinha became a symbol of animal rights, police brutality and security brutality in Brazil.

Consequences

After an agreement with the Public Ministry, Carrefour and security were fined BRL 1 million in March 2019 for what happened, and BRL 1 million was transferred to an animal protection fund set up by the municipality of Osasco. To identify animals residing in its stores and rescue and transport them to shelters, the company also conducted a census. around 600,000 comments about the event were made on Carrefour's social media platforms in November 2019, most of which were unfavourable.
