EastEnders is a British soap opera, examining the domestic and professional lives of working class people who live in the fictitious London Borough of Walford in the East End of London. The show airs on BBC One and entered its 38th broadcast year on 1 January 2023 with episode number 6620. Chris Clenshaw continued his role as executive producer, while Kate Oates continued as senior executive producer. During 2023, EastEnders typically aired four episodes in a time slot of 7:30 pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays with episodes being around 27 to 29 minutes long.

43 regular characters and an additional 23 characters portrayed by child actors were present at the beginning of the year. The Mitchell family consists of patriarch Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden), his son Ben Mitchell (Max Bowden), who runs the mechanic's garage, sister Sam Mitchell (Kim Medcalf), Phil's distant relative Billy Mitchell (Perry Fenwick), Billy's granddaughter Lola Pearce (Danielle Harold) and Jay Brown (Jamie Borthwick), who was fostered by Billy and runs the car lot. Ben and Lola have a child together, Lexi Pearce (Isabella Brown), while Billy has two children with his ex-wife Honey Mitchell (Emma Barton), Janet Mitchell (Grace) and Will Mitchell (Freddie Phillips). Honey is in a relationship with Jay. Ben is married to police officer Callum "Halfway" Highway (Tony Clay). Phil is romantically involved with Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace), part of the Slater family along with her children Tommy Moon (Sonny Kendall), Bert Moon (Elliot Briffett) and Ernie Moon (Cody Briffett), her cousin Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner) and Stacey's children Lily Slater (Lillia Turner), Arthur Fowler (Rocco Brenner) and Hope Fowler (Isabelle Smith), as well as Stacey's wife Eve Unwin (Heather Peace) and mother Jean Slater (Gillian Wright), and Kat's nephew Freddie Slater (Bobby Brazier). Kat and Phil run the launderette and a cab firm together. The Beale family consists of Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth), her grandson, Bobby Beale (Clay Milner Russell), and distant relative Martin Fowler (James Bye), who is Hope's father. Kathy is also Ben's mother and runs the local café and a gay bar, The Prince Albert. The Fox/Trueman family includes Patrick Trueman (Rudolph Walker), who acts as a father figure to sisters Denise Fox (Diane Parish), who runs the salon, Fox and Hair, and Kim Fox (Tameka Empson). Denise has a son with Phil, Raymond Dawkins (Michael Jose Pomares Calixte), and a daughter, Chelsea Fox (Zaraah Abrahams). Kim meanwhile has two children of her own, Pearl Fox (Arayah Harris-Buckles) and Mica Fox. Kim is in a relationship with postman Howie Danes (Delroy Atkinson), who has a son, Denzel Danes (Jaden Ladega). Denise is in a civil partnership with police officer Jack Branning (Scott Maslen), whose two nieces, Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy), a nurse, and Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty), also live on the square together; Jack has two children, Amy Mitchell (Ellie Dadd) and Ricky Mitchell (Frankie Day). Martin is the ex-husband of Sonia, and lives with gym owner Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean), her son Albie Watts and her half-brother Zack Hudson (James Farrar).

The Carter family run the The Queen Victoria public house; they consist of Shirley Carter (Linda Henry), daughter-in-law Linda Carter (Kellie Bright), who is an alcoholic, and her three children, Nancy Carter (Maddy Hill), Ollie Carter (Harry Farr) and Annie Carter. The Taylor and Baker family includes Karen Taylor (Lorraine Stanley), her son Keanu Taylor (Danny Walters), daughter Bernadette Taylor (Clair Norris), her former romantic interest Mitch Baker (Roger Griffiths), their grandchildren, Mia Atkins (Mahalia Malcolm) and Mackenzie Atkins (Isaac Lemonius), and Mitch's daughter Bailey Baker (Kara-Leah Fernandes), as well as Mitch's nephews, Finlay Baker (Ashley Byam) and Felix Baker (Matthew James Morrison), who performs as a drag queen under the name Tara Misu. Keanu is also Albie's father. The Panesar family run the local shop and a pest-control business, and they consist of Suki Panesar (Balvinder Sopal) and two of her children, Vinny Panesar (Shiv Jalota) and doctor Ash Kaur (Gurlaine Kaur Garcha), and her estranged husband Nish Panesar (Navin Chowdhry). Nish also has a son, Ravi Gulati (Aaron Thiara), and grandson, Davinder "Nugget" Gulati (Juhaim Rasul Choudhury). Other characters include Tom "Rocky" Cotton (Brian Conley), Harvey Monroe (Ross Boatman) and Reiss Colwell (Jonny Freeman).

The first cast change of 2023 was confirmed earlier in 2022 when it was reported that Harold would leave her role of Lola after a brain cancer diagnosis.[2] Following this, it was announced on 5 November 2022 that Lola's mother, Emma Harding, would appear in the series for the first time in January 2023, played by Patsy Kensit.[1] The introduction of Fabrizio Santino as Brett Nelson, a man from Zack's past, was announced on 29 December 2022.[3]

During 2023, EastEnders typically aired four episodes of roughly 30 minutes in a time slot of 7:30 pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, though episodes are sometimes moved or extra episodes added for different reasons. Kate Oates continued her role as senior executive producer from 2018,[4] and Chris Clenshaw continued his role as executive producer from 2022.[5]

All official ratings cover a period of seven days from the original broadcast and are taken from the Broadcasters' Audience Research Board (BARB).[6] Airdates, credits, running times and episode summaries are taken from episodes, the official EastEnders website[7] and BBC programmes schedules.[8] Episode numbers are taken from Radio Times.[9]
