Season chronology

EastEnders is a British soap opera, examining the domestic and professional lives of working class people who live in the fictitious London Borough of Walford in the East End of London. The show airs on BBC1 and entered its tenth broadcasted year on 4 January 1994 with its 932nd episode, with Leonard Lewis continuing his role as executive producer until Barbara Emile took over. Lewis quit the role after the BBC controllers demanded an extra episode a week. EastEnders aired 142 episodes in 1994, with the the typical week comprising two half-hour episodes on BBC1, in a time slot of 7.30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, until 11 April 1994, when a third episode was added on Mondays, in a time slot of 8.00 pm.

Following the introduction of a third weekly episode, several characters were introduced to the series in early 1994. Lucy Speed was cast in the role of Natalie Price, the best friend of Bianca Jackson (Patsy Palmer), who made her first appearance on 18 January. David Roper was also cast as Geoff Barnes, a love interest for Michelle Fowler (Susan Tully).In a bid to portray positive examples of homosexual characters, producers cast the show's first lesbian couple: Della Alexander (Michelle Joseph), who first appeared on 1 March, and Binnie Roberts (Sophie Langham), who first appeared on 9 June. The "no-nonsense" grandmother of Alan Jackson (Howard Antony), Blossom Jackson, was introduced on 16 May. Mona Hammond was cast in the role. Caroline Paterson made her first appearance as Ruth Aitken on 28 July. The character was created as a love interest for Mark Fowler (Todd Carty). Tony Caunter was also cast as Roy Evans, a love interest for Pat Butcher (Pam St. Clement); he debuted on 26 December. Roy's son, Barry Evans (Shaun Williamson), was introduced on 27 December; the character was originally intended for a guest role, which developed into a regular role.

Nicola Stapleton quit the role of Mandy Salter, following a two-year period on the show, after growing tired of all the attention she received from being in such a high-profile show. Mandy departed on 13 January. Nicole Arumugam left the series in 1994; her character Shelley Lewis departed on 24 March, but reappeared for one episode on 13 December. Mike Reid took a long hiatus from his role as Frank Butcher and made a temporary departure on 7 April. Ian Reddington left his role as Richard Cole in 1994; the character departed the series on 21 July, following a series of arguments with Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt). Anna Barkan made her final appearance as Nadia Mitchell on 29 August, following the conclusion of the character's storylines.

Following his 1993 departure, Steve Elliot (Mark Monero) was given a reprieve; the character returned on 20 January. Jacqui Gordon-Lawrence reprised her role as Etta Tavernier for a three episode guest stint in March. Sophie Lawrence also reprised her role as Diane Butcher for a five episode guest stint for a storyline surrounding Frank Butcher's disappearance. Peggy Mitchell, who was portrayed by Jo Warne for three months in 1991, was reintroduced on 7 November, with Carry On actress, Barbara Windsor taking on the role. Scott Matthewman of The Stage commented on the recast in 2006: "Quite the biggest – and most inexplicable – transformation is that of Peggy Mitchell in EastEnders.

List of episodes

During 1994, EastEnders aired typically two half-hour episodes in a time slot of 7.30 pm on Tuesday and Thursday, until 11 April 1994 when a third episode was added on Mondays in a time slot of 8.00 pm. The episodes were broadcast on BBC1. A weekly omnibus edition was also broadcast on Sundays. Leonard Lewis continued his role as executive producer until Barbara Emile took over. The episodes were repeated on Drama from May 2020.

Ian tells Cindy that five people have overdue payments for his loan business; he later is asked to meet his new bank manager, Tina Whiteside, who tells him the business is not performing as well as it should.

Arthur's wallpaper falls off during the night due to Ron's dodgy paste so Pauline makes him buy new wallpaper and do it again; Arthur gets Ron to help and the room is decorated in time; Arthur is later surprised to find Pauline arranged a birthday party for him in that room; however, he later falls asleep during the party. Pat and Geoff meet for the first time and Pat seems more interested in Geoff than Michelle is. Nigel is annoyed that Debbie keeps talking about how her first day at work was; she asks him for some money to buy new work clothes and when Ian asks Nigel for a payment, Nigel is unable to do so. Ricky arranges to see Bianca while David and Pat are at the party but David leaves the party early before Bianca and Ricky are able to sneak away. Mark calls Ruth and she returns to Walford; he convinces Michelle to let her stay as she cannot afford her own place due to not having a job.

Bianca covers a love bite on her neck; she and Ricky try to meet again in secret but are seen by Mark and Ruth at the launderette and then David catches them at home when they think he is out; David then tells Ricky that they should work together more at the car lot and says they can buy more stock together the next day. Nellie reveals it is her birthday; Pauline and Arthur are annoyed that she did not tell them in advance and Nellie dislikes the presents they get her; Arthur moans that Nellie always wants to be the centre of attention; Nellie goes for a drink with Jules and Blossom and says she is not wanted by her family; she leaves after seeing her friends together at the bar. While Gita is at home on her own in the evening, a brick is thrown through her bedroom window.

Gita calls the police and an officer arrives; the next day she tells Sanjay she does not want any help from him and later she is visited by Sergeant McPearson; Gita reluctantly admits that the attack was racially aggravated but thinks she will be seen as a victim if the police install surveillance equipment. Sanjay tells Mark about it, who says people grow out of racism as he has done racist things in the past and is not racist now; Sanjay stops talking to Mark; later, Arthur finds out but Mark blames peer pressure; Sanjay hears Arthur saying that people are different but everyone should get along so accuses Arthur of being racist himself as he will always see him as different. Nellie says she wants to forget about her birthday and later tells Cindy about the racist attack on Gita; Cindy says she fell out with Gita so Nellie tells her to talk to her as everyone needs friends; when Cindy visits Gita, Gita does not answer the door. Jules asks Blossom out for a meal but not as a date. David and Ricky go to a car auction and meet Jim Harvey, an old business associate of Frank's and David does a deal with him to supply cars; David also buys a sports car to bring in customers. Nadia visits Phil and says she will grant him a divorce if he pays her £1,000 so she can relocate to Germany. Broadcast at 8.00 pm due to coverage of the 1994 Commonwealth Games.

Ricky wonders if David took the money from the car lot. Bianca tries to get Carol and Alan to go out so she can bring Ricky home but they work out she is planning something so decide to stay in; Ricky realises his house is empty so they go to his room where she gets on the bed and he takes his top off. Blossom and Jules go out dancing and drinking and have a good time. Arthur tells Nellie to enjoy herself while she still can, using Blossom as an example; Nellie says that Arthur just wants her out of his life. Ian tells Nigel that he will take him to court for the money he owes but later Ian is advised to write off the debt; Ian shouts at Cindy and later gets drunk in the Vic on his own, while Nigel worries about going to court. Geoff bumps into Pat several times and they have a coffee together; when Michelle asks about it, Geoff says that Pat just wants someone to listen to her. Kathy finds out Nadia has blackmailed Phil but he says it is worth paying so they can marry.

Ricky tells David that he is seeing Bianca but asks him not to tell Pat; David says he does not like Ricky taking Bianca to the room they share because he also sleeps there and later David tells Pat that Bianca reminds him of Carol at that age. David also tells Ricky he sold a car for cash and gave a £300 discount, which makes Ricky suspicious that David may have pocketed the £300. Bianca tries to suggest various men for Natalie to date. Arthur sees Gita afraid to go inside her house as three youths are standing outside; Arthur tells Sanjay who visits Gita but she says he cannot do anything and she will not allow him to move back in; that night, she is scared when people are outside laughing and knocking on her door but it is just her downstairs neighbour, Phil, having lost his key. Binnie suggests to Sharon that she could call some of her friends to bring more customers into the Vic. Nadia visits Phil and he gives her the cash; she goes to the Vic and sees Grant and Sharon; Grant is forced to tell Sharon that Phil is divorcing Nadia and marrying Kathy but not to tell anyone else. Nellie finds out that Jules and Blossom have spent more time together and when Sharon jokes about them potentially getting married, Nellie leaves the Vic; she tells Arthur that she used to enjoy going to the seaside when she was young.

Gita has not slept and stays in all day; she eventually admits to Sanjay that she was scared to go out but she will be fine to work the next day if he looks after Sharmilla; Sanjay says he wants to find the people who threw the brick. Blossom invites Nellie out with her and Jules but she declines as she think she will be intruding; Nellie feels sorry for herself at home but Pauline insists on taking her to the Vic. Binnie is frustrated that Della will not be open about their relationship; Binnie's friends start to arrive at the Vic and Grant thinks it is a hen party until Sharon says the women are all lesbians; Grant wants them to leave and to sack Binnie but Sharon convinces him otherwise; Natalie is also shocked that her friend Binnie is gay. Mark admits to Steve that he likes Ruth but says she will not be interested in him.
