OHM Charity Fashion Show

edit

The OHM Charity Fashion Show is a student-organized initiative that was started in 2012 at the University of Western Ontario. Since its commencement, OHM has been a proud sponsor of the Canadian Cancer Society -- a charity that is dedicated to finding a cure for cancer through extensive research. The event aims to promote self-expression through creative artistry, by providing a stage for aspiring students to showcase their talents as designers, dancers, and/or stylists. OHM has teamed up with brands such as, American Apparel and Lululemon Athletica, but also features local student designs. Along with full runway modelling scenes, the OHM Charity Fashion Show features original dance choreographies in between scenes. Each year, the show garners between 200-250 attendees, with a predominant demographic of university students, as well as adults aged 40-55. The event takes place in London, Ontario, sometime in the month of March (specified date varies by year). In previous years, the event has been held at Centennial Hall or the London Convention Centre.

Mission

edit

OHM's mission is to raise money to help fund cancer research, annually donating all of its net proceeds to the Canadian Cancer Society. OHM uses fashion as an outlet for advocating an inspirational message, relying on student contributions. The OHM team believes that fashion drives positive energy into the lives of those who embrace it.

Fundraising

edit

OHM hosts many affiliated fundraising events prior to the show. The fundraising events collect donations and attempt to expand OHM's body of supporters. Annually, during the month of November, OHM teams up with Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory to support Movember -- a national awareness campaign that promotes a healthy lifestyle for males. OHM sells chocolate moustaches to students in Western University's Community Centre. The Movember campaign is one of OHM's most popular and successful fundraising events.

OHM has administrated numerous sponsorship opportunities with generous corporate and local companies who wish to support the cause, such as, Killam Properties, Dylco Builders Inc., and Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt Business Law Firm. Some companies choose to donate items for the silent auction that takes place the day of the event. For example, in 2016, BMW donated a free full-weekend test drive for any car of choice. In exchange for their donations, all sponsors are granted with free VIP tickets for the show and are advertised in OHM's catalogue.

Social Media

edit

OHM has designed various social media campaigns, actively engaging with its 1,000+ followers across Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest. OHM is most active on Facebook and Instagram.

In September 2016, OHM introduced its new fashion-inspired blog, featuring themed articles based on upcoming events. For example, in September, the blog listed trendy back-to-school essentials; in October, the article was titled "HallOHMween", with a composed list of original Halloween costume ideas.

The Executive Committee

edit

OHM's executive committee consists of ten different roles, which are divided amongst a number of dedicated volunteers. Many members of the executive committee are OHM veterans, who have been a part of the event since their first year as a Western student. However, OHM also accepts applications for executive positions from new volunteers. The committee responsibilities are ranging; however, all members work together the day of the show to ensure success. At the end of each year, the current OHM directors nominate a new set of directors for the upcoming year. Then, the directors select their executive committee based on applications. Those who do not earn a executive position are appointed as general volunteers the day of the event. The first executive meeting is held in September, making preparations and brainstorming for the year ahead.
