Background

Kanye West's eleventh studio album Donda 2 was released exclusively on West's Stem Player device on February 23, 2022, and featured two songs with posthumous collaborations with XXXTentacion, "True Love" and "Selfish". On May 23, 2022, XXXTentacion's estate revealed on his social media that "True Love" would be released as a single and on streaming services on May 27, 2022, a day after the official XXXTentacion documentary, Look at Me was released on Hulu. The single was also used as the credits music for the documentary. West added his verse posthumously, as XXXTentacion was murdered on June 18, 2018.[2][3][4][5]

In the song, West and XXXTentacion discuss their romantic struggles and hardships. West and XXXTentacion both had highly publicized romantic disputes, with West's divorce from his ex-wife Kim Kardashian and XXXTentacion's split with his ex-girlfriend Geneva Ayala.[6][4] The cover art depicts notes from a journal XXXTentacion owned that was recently discovered by his mother.[4][5]

West previously had a posthumous collaboration with XXXTentacion on the song "One Minute" on the latter’s third studio album, Skins. In addition, a collaborative song with both West and XXXTentacion titled "The Storm" leaked in 2019 for the cancelled West album, Yandhi; the song would be reworked into "Everything We Need" from Jesus Is King without the XXXTentacion verse. Another West song titled "Selfish" featuring XXXTentacion was previewed during the Donda 2 listening party and released exclusively on West's Stem Player.
