"The Virgin comes with a white dress, blue cloak, crown of golden stars, her feet cannot be seen, her hands are outstretched with the scapular in the right, the scapular is brown, her hair is long, wavy dark brown, the stripe is on the medium, the elongated face, the fine elongated nose, the very pretty mouth with slightly thick lips, the color of the face is dark, lighter than that of the Angel, different at the same time, very pretty, a very strange voice, I don't know how to explain it, there is no woman who resembles the Virgin either in her voice or in anything."

Our Lady of La Salette edit

His physical appearance is as follows:[3]

"The Lady was tall and with a majestic appearance. Her dress was white, with an apron around her waist. It seemed to be gold in color, but they could not say for certain because the fabric did not seem to be of the earth, and it shone more brilliantly than the sun. Over her arms she had a beautiful white shawl surrounded by a border containing many multicolored roses. A chain with a crucifix hung from her neck. Two items hung over the crossbar of the crucifix– on one side a hammer, and on the other side pliers. A crown of roses on her head radiated luminous rays, like a diadem. Tears from her beautiful eyes flowed over her cheeks. A light more brilliant then the sun, but somehow different, surrounded her."

Physical appearance of our lady of Lourdes edit

His physical appearance is as follows:[4]

“She has the appearance of a young girl of sixteen or seventeen. She is dressed in a white robe, girdled at the waist with a blue ribbon which flows down all around it. A yoke closes in graceful pleats at the base of the neck; the sleeves are long and tight fitting. She wears upon her head a veil which is also white; this veil gives just a glimpse of her hair and then falls down at the back below her waist. Her feet are bare but covered by the last folds of her robe except at the point where a yellow rose shines upon each of them. She holds on her right arm a rosary of white beads with a chain of gold shining like the two roses on her feet.”

¿What it's really like? edit

According to the following:[5]

"The Virgin Mary has a very different physical appearance from one statue to another. One thing is certain, according to all the seers interviewed over the centuries, the Virgin Mary is beautiful, very beautiful and she cannot be described."

In many representations, the Virgin Mary is represented as dark or white, although in question we do not know if she herself was dark or white.[6]

According to specialist, his physical appearance would be the following:[9]

"The result of the experiment was the face of a young woman with an oval face, a straight nose and full lips."

Saint Luke portraying the face of the Virgin Mary edit

Though not included in the canonic pictorial of Mary's life, the scene became increasingly popular as Saint Luke gained his own devotional following as the patron saint of artists in general, and more specifically as patron saint of the Guild of Saint Luke, the most common name of local painters' guilds. The legend of Saint Luke as the author of the first Christian icons had been developed in Byzantium during the Iconoclastic Controversy, as attested by 8th century sources. By the 11th century, a number of images started being attributed to his authorship and venerated as authentic portraits of Christ and the Virgin Mary.[10] In the Late Middle Ages and the Renaissance, Luke's ascendancy paralleled a rise in status of painters themselves, whereas before the Renaissance, sculptors' guilds and their associated craftsmen—which also included masons and architects, as all worked with stone—tended to be regarded more highly than painters. Many Guilds of St. Luke were conglomerate associations of various professions, including painters, paint-mixers, book illuminators, and sellers of all of these things. Saddle-makers too were members of these guilds: like illuminators, who worked with vellum, they too painted on leather when creating the colorful military harness of the day. The earliest known version of this theme in Byzantine art is a 13th-century miniature in a Greek psalter preserved in the Saint Catherine's Monastery on Mount Sinai. The theme appears in Western art in the second half of the 14th century (miniature in the Evangeliary of Johannes von Troppau, now in Vienna) and will be frequently represented in Italian and Early Netherlandish art of the 15th century. Rogier van der Weyden's version is the earliest known in Early Netherlandish painting. It is in Boston and copies of which are in Bruges, where it was originally painted, Alte Pinakothek, Munich, and the Hermitage.[11]

Latter-Day Saint depictions edit

Mary, mother of Jesus is also described in First Nephi, a Latter-Day document, as "a virgin, and she was exceedingly fair and white" (1 Nephi 11:13).[12]

Were medieval Christians racists? edit

The Professor Rachel Fulton Brown wrote a book called "How to Signal you are not a White Supremacist" Where it shows that medieval people were racist and that the Virgin Mary was brown or black according to the passage from the song of songs.[13] However, this was answered by Sarah Randles stating that medieval Christians decided to represent her with light or white skin and that this did not mean that they were racist.[14]
