Wording edit

Per [1] the welcome message should be reworded. @Boleyn: Vexations (talk) 15:07, 28 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, Vexations, I was looking for the best place to raise this. Twice recently I've had editors raise this with me and while I'm surprised it would cause offence, I suppose different wording would be suitable for short and long-term editors. Boleyn (talk) 15:40, 28 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
As far as I know, it is not possible for a template to distinguish between new and experienced users. We would have to reword it so that is suitable for all users, or change the page curation tools so that it can select a different template. My preference is to post notes about improving a page on the talk page of the article, not on the talk page of the creator. That would make this template obsolete. Sorry for my poor wording, Vexations, I meant different wording could make it suitable for all, something like thank you for your work rather than welcome. Personally as a creator I would rather know if there was a tag applied and it would encourage me to improve it. It's also useful in NPP because I can then see that the person has been warned multiple times about the same issue but is ignoring it. Thanks, Boleyn (talk) 08:49, 29 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
The wording for the template normally used for this is actually Template:Taggednote-NPF; honestly, I'm not sure when this template is used at all. Regardless, yeah, I'm not a fan of having the welcome in there. Universally, I think it's a bit hard to make templates like these give new users enough advice but without making it seemed like experienced users have just registered their account. For example, a user with 60,000 edits doesn't want to get a message telling them how to sign their posts and that help is always open at the Teahouse, but that info would be extremely helpful for a new user. However, the welcome is definitely something that can be removed, imo, as unlike the "sign your posts" and Teahouse parts of the message, it doesn't provide any info for the user. I think having Thanks for creating {}! I edit here too, under the username {} and it's nice to meet you :-) is sufficient.--SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 14:17, 29 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
Also courtesy pinging Winged Blades of Godric as the one who added the "welcome" part to begin with.--SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 14:25, 29 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
Concur with Vexations in entirety and, that's a goal of the CWL2019. The concerns raised over here are the sentiments behind this essay but there's not much of a solution. If we reword it, we make it less patronizing but also less newbie-friendly whilst the current version is more newbie-friendly but more patronizing to experienced editors. At any case, feel free to remove the phrase or whatever. Also see this pdf and the associated finding(s) at Meta. WBGconverse 05:37, 1 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
Well, I doubt that removing the welcome part would really make much of a difference; we already have the "thanks for creating X", "I edit here too, under the username {}}} and it's nice to meet you:-)", and the Teahouse invitation all in this template, so I don't think there would be any WP:BITE concerns.--SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 05:44, 1 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for removing it, I've also removed it from taggednote-NPF.--SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 14:56, 1 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
