Depth edit

It seems to me that depth would be a good piece of information to have for an impact site. However, I've never edited a template before and feel a bit tentative about doing that. What would I do to get started with template editing? Donpayette (talk) 16:20, 24 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

  Doing... I'll add a |[depth/height]= |depth= parameter to this template. In the meantime, you can take a look at Help:Template#Creating and editing templates, that should give you an idea of how to edit templates. Cheers, Samwb123T-C-E 19:28, 24 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
(edit conflict)Welcome to the "deep end"! There are a few pages on templates, both here and on MediaWiki, but it's not great. My way is to copy the whole text from the edit window to a sandbox page in user space (I would use, say, User:Ronhjones/Sandbox2), do the edits to the template, then in another sandbox page call the template - {{User:Ronhjones/Sandbox2}}. If it all goes wrong then no damage is done.
For a new parameter, see how it's done for the others...
e.g.
| label15 = State
| data15 = {{{state|}}}

so I would try, add (using a number not used - i.e. 22)

| label22 = Depth
| data22 = {{{depth|}}}
If it works in the sandbox, then edit an article and change the top line to point to your test template, then do a show preview, and see the effect (Don't save).

(Alternative - one can create a sandbox as a subpage of the template - e.g. Template:Infobox terrestrial impact site/Sandbox - useful if the template is protected and you need an admin to do the final edit.  Ronhjones  (Talk)

  Done adding {{{depth|}}} (|depth= parameter). Samwb123T-C-E 19:52, 24 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, guys. I'll check out what you've done, and do some experimenting with the Sandbox idea. Donpayette (talk) 01:04, 25 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Target parameter not working edit

A parameter target is given in the parameter documentation, but is not shown in the blank Infobox example, and when actually used in an article (for example, Carswell crater) does not seem to be working.--papageno (talk) 00:23, 1 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Unable to get template to work edit

I am attempting to use this template on Prince Albert Impact Crater, but I can't seem to get the locator map to work. I am unsure what I am doing wrong. Please help! Thanks, Kevyn (talk) 00:23, 10 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

  • Figured it out! I had the map name wrong. Kevyn (talk) 00:41, 10 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

New attributes edit

I propose adding the following attributes:

  • imp_speed: the impactor’s speed (km/s)
  • imp_mass: the impactor’s mass (tons)
  • ori_dia: The Original diameter of the impact crater before erosion took place
  • ext_event: the extinction event attributed to the impact

RScheiber (talk) 01:07, 22 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

I want to add:

  • nr_of_craters: the number of craters in case the page is about several craters in proximity due to breakup of the impact object
  • diameter_min: the diameter of the smallest crater in a sequence (see nr_of_craters)
  • depth_min: the depth of the smallest crater in a sequence (see nr_of_craters)
  • impact_object or impactor or meterorite: some meteorites have their own page, this can link to the respective page

RScheiber (talk) 09:47, 22 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

  • crater_lake: the lake(s) in the crater
