TemplateData needed edit

This template needs TemplateData to work with the Visual Editor because I use it a lot with the VE and it is really annoying. It appears to be relatively straightforward, a single mandatory string parameter which is the section name to be cited. Since it almost always used for the census year (2006, 2011, 2016 etc), it probably makes sense to call the paramet "year" and maybe leave the explanation that other sections can be named as well to the description (I've never seen it used that way but maybe it happens).   Done Kerry Raymond, It's on the documentation page - I think you could have created it yourself. You can certainly alter it if you don't like the way I've done it (it's the first time I've dipped into <templatedata>). The parameter isn't named. The template just takes one unnamed parameter. "section title" was used because the target is always the title of a section but, as Cabayi pointed out, the parameter isn't named. --AussieLegend () 08:51, 24 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. The template protection prevents access to the Manage TemplateData tool isn't invokable. If the intention of the template protection is not to prevent people adding TemplateData, then surely the protection mechanism needs to be modified so that aspect is still accessible? Aside, with TemplateData, you usually name all parameters as VE users don't see the paremeters in the same way as source editor users do so it's meaningless to show them the numbers. However, when I made that change (to label the parameter), although it is visible when you look at the Template page, that change isn't happening when you try to insert the template into an article. Normally I would do a "purge" on the template and it would work, but this doesn't seem to be working. Does the template protection stop me from purging it to update it? (Purging seems to be a dark art) Kerry (talk) 13:54, 24 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
Where are you trying? Template:CensusAU or Template:CensusAU/doc? Cabayi (talk) 14:54, 24 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
On Barron, Queensland. It kept saying "1" instead of "year". I just checked again and now it is saying "year" so it was a cache issue. Did you do something (like a purge, directly or indirectly) or did the cache just naturally refresh as they do eventually? Kerry (talk) 15:19, 24 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

Link to specific census articles edit

@Graham87: At the moment, this year parameter links to a section within Census in Australia. Should we modify this to link to specific census articles where they exist e.g. 2016 Australian census and only link to a section in Census in Australia when there is no specific article? Kerry (talk) 04:29, 18 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Graham87 and Kerry Raymond: I agree, we should modify the template as proposed. It's better to link to the more specific article where possible. —Mx. Granger (talk · contribs) 03:30, 1 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Kerry Raymond and Mx. Granger: I agree as well. Kerry, I didn't get your ping from a couple of years ago because pings after-the-fact don't work (see this). Graham87 07:05, 1 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
The problem is that you can't sign Talk pages from an iPad. The iPad replaces 4 tildes with 3 tildes, but it's an iPad issue not a MediaWiki issue so it can't get fixed via phabricator. Kerry (talk) 01:26, 2 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
