Wat Phra Dhammakaya

edit
A monument at Wat Phra Dhammakaya with a million Buddha images.
A monument at Wat Phra Dhammakaya with a million Buddha images.
  • ... that a new Buddhist temple started in the 1970s in Thailand, does now have three million followers worldwide? Source: "Dhammakaya is said to have three million followers, ..." (New York Times, 2017), Source: "When Wat Phra Dhammakaya was opened in 1977, Phra Dhammachayo was appointed abbot." (Mackenzie, 2007)
    • ALT1:... that the Thai temple Wat Phra Dhammakaya contains a large monument (pictured) that consists of a million Buddha images? Source: "There are 300,000 images encrusted on the dome and top terrace. 700.000 more within the cetiya." (Snodgrass, 2003, p.173), Source:"In keeping with the magnitude of this vision, Dhammakāya leaders have constructed a number of new buildings to accommodate and attract large numbers of practitioners: ... the Mahathammakai Chedi (Mahā Dhammakāya Cetiya), a massive stūpa with 1,000,000 golden Buddha images, which serves as a focus for communal ritual and devotion ... • Comment: (With regard to ALT1:) A DYK item about the same monument appeared on the German Wikipedia in 2013. That entry only mentioned the Buddhas on the dome, though.

Improved to Good Article status by Farang Rak Tham (talk) and Wikiman5676 (talk). Nominated by Farang Rak Tham (talk) at 23:25, 6 February 2018 (UTC).

I'd like to review this, but it will probably not happen today. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:02, 9 February 2018 (UTC)
That's appreciated.--Farang Rak Tham (talk) 17:41, 9 February 2018 (UTC)
Thank you for a substantial detailed article on excellent sources, offline sources accepted AGF, no copyvio obvious. - Very minor questions. Hooks: I think ALT1 is more unusual, striking the other.
  • The hook facts need a source imediately after the sentence, - there is one for 300.000, but not for the 700.000.
Done. --Farang Rak Tham (talk) 14:29, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
  • The image is licensed. I added (pictured). I am not sure we can say "consists", while the image says "is carpeted".
There are Buddha images inside and outside, as the sources above say. So consists covers both.--Farang Rak Tham (talk) 14:29, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
Maybe my lack of English, - for me, "consists" says "made exclusively of", while I'd say "contains" if not. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:25, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
You are right, but the hook sentence already has the word contains. Nevertheless, I could write an ALT2, but you have already approved a hook.--Farang Rak Tham (talk) 20:55, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
  • The image caption can be shorter.
Fixed. --Farang Rak Tham (talk) 14:29, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
  • Article: Sometimes an "and" combines things that don't belong together, such as "It was founded in 1970 by the maechi (nun) Chandra Khonnokyoong and Luang Por Dhammajayo and is the most well-known and the fastest growing temple of the Dhammakaya Movement." - Split sentence?
Fixed. Do you have other examples?--Farang Rak Tham (talk) 14:29, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
I thought I'd remember a second one, but it's not obvious, and no reason not to approve anyway --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:25, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
  • "best-known" instead of "most well-known"?
Fixed --Farang Rak Tham (talk) 14:29, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
  • One image has no caption.
Fixed --Farang Rak Tham (talk) 14:29, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
Consider to go for FAC after this. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:19, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
I will look into the comments as soon as I can. I have taken the liberty of numbering the comments. I'll be back.--Farang Rak Tham (talk) 00:01, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
All fixed. Done. --Farang Rak Tham (talk) 14:29, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
Thank you. I removed the icons, as they look so close to what a reviewer uses, which might be misleading. - Back to FAC: the fist step might be a peer review. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:25, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
Gerda Arendt, would you be interested to do a FA review on Merit (Buddhism) or Faith in Buddhism? I have nominated both to GA, and am quite confident that they stand a chance at FA. I am not so certain about Wat Phra Dhammakaya.--Farang Rak Tham (talk) 20:55, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
DYK reviews, and GA reviews, are done by one person. For peer review and FAC, several people comment. If you nominate this temple for peer review - I'd do that on the DYK day - I'll review. I recommend to process one article at a time. - If you mean if I'll do the DYK reviews for the other 2, - I don't know yet. I try to review different topics by different users. - Finally: you can always improve the hook, - I'll watch and can approve an ALT also, or only. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:02, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
ALT2:... that the Thai temple Wat Phra Dhammakaya built a large monument (pictured) that contains a million Buddha images? --Farang Rak Tham (talk) 21:18, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
ps: if you mean GA review for the other 2, - no, I don't do GA reviews, feeling that I can't really judge prose. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:04, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
I meant doing a peer review in preparation for a FA review, for either Faith in Buddhism or Merit (Buddhism), that's up to you. The thing is that I am not that confident about bringing Wat Phra Dhammakaya to FA: there may be a language issue, since half of the sources for this article are Thai language. And there may be issue with neutrality. The two articles above, on the other hand, are quite mature articles with almost entirely sources in English.--Farang Rak Tham (talk) 21:18, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
Understand better, thank you. I like the ALT, but think most readers will be surprised that a "temple" would "build", reading "temple" as a building. Ideas? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:35, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
ALT3... that the Thai Buddhist Dhammakaya Foundation built a large monument (pictured) that contains a million Buddha images?
ALT3 preferred. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:04, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
