This is a very relevant subject, and the hook is certainly going to attract readers. However, a source published by a human rights organization maybe too closely associated with the subject, so better use a scholarly sources like de Waal instead. Secondly, the words never condemned in the main hook imply an attitude, but in the Wiki article, a policy is given as a reason instead. Policies may have been developed for several reasons, so to avoid WP:OR either adjust the article, or the hook. The main hook is the most interesting, but ALT1 is okay as well, as long as you rephrase to prevent OR and change the source cited. Farang Rak Tham (talk) 00:02, 9 February 2018 (UTC)
- @Farang Rak Tham: Thanks for the review. The hook fact already has 3 citations in the article, and two of them are to articles by de Waal. In the New York Times (citation [5]) De Waal writes: "Through their office windows, O.A.U. employees could see the inmates exercise or talk to relatives in the ramshackle open-air visitors’ gallery. But for many Africans then, the struggle against European colonialism meant turning a blind eye to the oppression of Africans by Africans. Out of respect for the O.A.U.’s principle of noninterference in the internal affairs of its member states, staffers never spoke up about what they saw out of their windows." Coming to promote this nomination, I cannot find the hook facts for ALT0 in the article. It says that the inner courtyard was visible from the OAU building but nothing about killings and torture being visible. Nor are the facts in ALT1 explicitly stated in the article. The quotations you provide in this nomination are not enough to support the hooks without the information being included in the article. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:48, 19 February 2018 (UTC)
- Good catch. Please note though that the most reliable source here is de Waal above here, not the human rights organization website cited in the hook. According to de Waal, "In November 1974, a few weeks after deposing Selassie, Ethiopia’s new Marxist military rulers lined up 60 of his ministers against a wall at Alem Bekagn and shot them in cold blood within full view of the O.A.U. headquarters." That's for the part on killing. As for torture, this is not mentioned explicitly. Oppression is, in the quote just above here. Based on the November 1974 quote and the quote above, both from de Waal, may i just rephrasing:
