Deserves better

For such a long and successful mission/craft the article could be expanded and reorganised. There's lots of good info at the external links, eg the eccentric orbit to avoid radiation belts, comparing data during slewing with the ROSAT RASS, real time transmission of data rather than on-board storage. Proposed automatic updating of orbital elements

I've proposed that this article be included in a trial involving using a bot to update orbital elements automatically on a fortnightly basis. Italic title

User:Huntster I'd like to revert clarify the use of italics [1] for the name. As XMM is an abbreviation (of the mission name), I would leave it without. I note Voyager 1 , Voyager 2 has italics (and the Voyager program doesn't), but none of these List of X-ray space telescopes use italics, so I'm looking for a reason to keep it, and if we keep it, the current title should use italics to match. Widefox, do what you want. I have personal believes on italicization, mainly that any proper noun name of a spacecraft should be, including abbreviations. However, MOS:ITALICS has never been, and per editors there never will be, more specific on guidance for the subject. That absurdity is why I am no longer willing to expend much mental capital on arguing the topic. That said, I will point out that many of the names on the X-ray telescopes article should be italicized even per the limited available guidance, it's just that none of them ever have been since the article was first created. — Huntster (t @ c) 00:23, 27 June 2021 (UTC)

Actually I agree with your sentiment about spacecraft names after rereading MOS:ITALIC and have modified above ...

It seems to hang on: 1. has the vessel been named or not? And 2. does a space telescope's (a payload of a unnamed vessel) name abide by telescope or spacecraft naming - the example of the Hubble Space Telescope article would indicate the former. Question 1. isn't answered clearly for me from reading the lede. The lede seems to either a) conflate the observatory name and the mission name, or b) they both have the same name which seems implausible given "...High Throughput X-ray Spectroscopy Mission and the X-ray Multi-Mirror Mission, is an X-ray space observatory..." doesn't look correct to me - if it's called "Mission" then isn't that the mission name and not the name of the observatory?! XMM-Newton looks like it's been given a name, so if it has, and if it's a vessel it should be italic, if a telescope then per Hubble, I guess not. At least we should deconflated the mission and telescope names, and have consistency with the italics in the name and title ie. either remove italics from the prose (or add {{italictitle}}, whichever is more correct). More details on the cooling please

It mentions cooling, and that radiators are involved, and that there is a two-stage system. Is liquid/gas coolant pumped around or is it all passive. Any phase change ? Presumably there are no cryogens that are being lost. How much colder could the sensors be cooled if desired ? - Rod57 (talk) 14:57, 19 July 2021 (UTC)
