"Articles" meaning "apprenticeship"

edit

This makes no sense:

"...scrivener notaries are only appointed after five years articles to a practicing scrivener notary."

What should it say? " a five year apprenticeship" perhaps?

Yes, the rules refer to a five year apprenticeship: http://www.scriveners.org.uk/rules.htm. I've made the change.

Are they no longer called articles (like articled clerks being trainee solicitors these days, and there not being many indentured servants...)? -- ALoan (Talk) 10:12, 14 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Geographical proximity

edit
Historically, scrivener notaries were the only notaries public permitted to practice in the City of London, the liberties of Westminster, the borough of Southwark, and the area within three miles of the City. Due to their geographical proximity to many civil law countries, scrivener notaries are only appointed after a five year apprenticeship to a practicing scrivener notary.

"Geographical proximity"? Well, it's about 100 miles from the City to France, and about 300 miles to Scotland... I don't think that sounds like "geographical proximity to many civil law countries". What is this supposed to mean? Marnanel 00:58, 3 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

The article used to say "due to their geographical proximity to the embassies of many civil law countries ..." which makes a lot more sense. NRPanikker (talk) 13:21, 6 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
