Hello there,

This is my first post on wikipedia and I am trying to add some information about the founder of the company I now work for. I realise that this may breach some rules for posting on wikipedia and I would like to respect these rules by discussing the matter with an experienced poster.

William Brownie Garden appears to be quite a significant inventor and my own knowledge is limited by the fact that he has been dead for many years and is perhaps not a mainstream known figure.

A newspaper is about to do a story on him and naturally I want to provide them with correct, historically accurate information and would like help in verifing the claims laid down in the article that we have in our company records. I have already found that the "totaliser" claim may be false, however my manager and a descendant of William Brownie Garden may dispute this.

Hi Richard... As I noted below, a quick search online confirmed Garden as an inventor (and, as a teacher, I view the inventor of the revolving blackboard to be notable!). There are a number of issues with the article. The first is that it lacks 3rd party references that are absolutely critical for a Wikipedia article. You can add these to the article directly. That, plus some organization, will help the article immensely.

Just another note.... inasmuch as you stated that you are an employee of the company that Garden started, the argument can (and probably will) be made that there is a conflict of interest and it is possible that this will influence neutral editing. You'll want to be very careful about your editing since your motives and relationship with the person could be an influence. Wikipelli ^Talk 16:48, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

Not a hoax

a little work

There's lots more that needs to be done but, for the blackboard invention alone, the subject is notable and his invention is verified. I added citation needed tags where it needs to have references to the facts that are stated. I added a category (Scottish Inventors)and started writing a lede. need help

Hi... I've edited and organised and whatnot, but I need help with some of the inventions and quotes. The original editor suggested that Garden was the inventor of the tote board. I'm finding nothing at all to reinforce that. Non-skid cars? Can't find a thing.... Non-clutch cars? nothing... I'm good with this article being about the inventor of the roller board, but would like to include verifiable references for the other information in the article as originally stated. I'll wait a day or two, but then I feel I have to start deleting things. How about a picture of the man? Wikipelli ^Talk 23:53, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

Roller Board

This article assumes that the "roller board" is a common item known to everybody as well as bucket, or a television. But I have never seen a roller board. They must not be common in the United States, since I completed a doctorate (Ph.D.) during which I attended eight distinct schools, and studied for twenty-two years. That is a lot of experience with classrooms at all levels. So it is unlikely that my not ever seeing them is not due to spending my educational career in one building or school.

In fact a search of the internet with Google turns up no photograph the makes it possible for me to figure out what these are. The only knowledge I have of them is the line in this article, and it dose nothing to clarify the situation.

Thanks for the comment, Nick! I've been a teacher for 33 years and I've never seen one either! But then, I'm in the United States and from the researching I did for this article, and it's been awhile, I took them to be primarily in the UK or Europe. I'm sure you may have by now discovered what the rollerboard is, since you questioned this. If you have not, try a search on rolling blackboard. There is even one for sale in the UK on Ebay. Images can also be found. Should I find any further information I shall update you, this had been part of a project for my daughter to showcase a victorian relative.
