The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: page moved to Victoria, Hong Kong. Hopefully I read the end of this discussion correctly, let me know if there is more moving to be done here. Regards, Arbitrarily0 (talk) 12:54, 23 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Victoria City (disambiguation)Victoria City — The place name in Hong Kong is historic use. Victoria, British Columbia and Victoria, Seychelles are probably more primary uses to 21st century readers.|Relisting billinghurst sDrewth 07:39, 15 July 2010 (UTC) |SchmuckyTheCat (talk) 00:55, 7 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • Support - The name is disused and refers to a few areas of Hong Kong and the historical area in which it is located is now part of Central. Fridae'§Doom | Talk to me 11:29, 7 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
    • Comment: This is obviously not the case. Central is one of the many areas in the Victoria City. Victoria City isn't part of Central. 112.118.149.119 (talk) 16:24, 8 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose I really don't see the need for this. Victoria, British Columbia and Victoria, Seychelles are not under Victoria City, but Victoria. The only other pages under Victoria City are merely electoral constituencies and therefore have (electoral district) and (provincial electoral district) as disambiguators. This seems to be a case of moving the page just for the sake of it. Skinsmoke (talk) 00:17, 8 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
    • Comment Which is the reason why it should be Victoria (disambiguation), Victoria City is distinguishable from Victoria and there are no ambiguities between Victoria and Victoria City, the move is something worth thinking about and it is not a case of moving the page for the sake of it, now I mean to be civil so if you disagree with what I said please tell me on my talk page. • This dab page is incomplete. Almost all cities named Victoria can be Victoria, Victoria City, or City of Victoria. The term City of Victoria is in play here too, it redirects to Victoria City. The other terms, particularly City of Victoria, more commonly refer to many other places than the historical area of Hong Kong. (google it, you'll come up with cities all across the US and anywhere else people speak English). SchmuckyTheCat (talk)
  • Comment I think I understand what you are suggesting (both of you). If the Hong Kong one was really called the City of Victoria (or simply Victoria), then, clearly, the article should not be at Victoria City. That name would be original research. Per Wikipedia:Naming conventions (geographic names), the article should then be moved to Victoria, Hong Kong and the disambiguation page (if it is really still needed) could be moved as suggested. Skinsmoke (talk) 03:59, 9 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Comment in my review of the move, there seems to be insufficient evidence to support a move, especially when reviewing the links to the article. In addition there does not seem a good evidence base to keep this page especially in light of the preference for a single disambiguation page where possible, and it probably should be redirected to Victoria#Place names. To allow the discussion to continue, relisting. billinghurst sDrewth 07:39, 15 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Incoming links have had several years of editors fixing missed targets. Including the IP above fixing them when this move was proposed so there wouldn't be any bad targets. Where do you believe users should be taken when they search for Victoria City? A historical usage in Hong Kong, a specific city that currently uses this name, or a dab page of many cities globally that use the name? SchmuckyTheCat (talk)
All contemporary cities named "Victoria" use "Victoria City" or "City of Victoria" interchangeably as a longer form. In British Columbia, for instance, it separates the greater metro area from the city proper. And looking for a primary usage: as a google search (excluding wikipedia), the top links are for Texas and British Columba, an image search, 17 of 21 top images for "Victoria City" bring up Victoria, BC, 2 for Australia, 1 for HK (a wikipedia link), and one that is fictional. So my argument is that we should send all searches for Victoria City to one dab page (and your suggestion is fine) or that "Victoria City"/"City of Vcitoria" as searches have a primary usage - Victoria, British Columbia, not Victoria, Hong Kong. um....

I missed the move discussion above; not listed on the new Victoria City (geographic disambiguation) page there should be Victoria City (provincial electoral district) - see Victoria (electoral districts). And why should a disambiguation page be redirected to a particular target; if it's titled Victoria City (disambiguation) then it should be a disambiguation page, not a redirect to the "most popular".Skookum1 (talk) 16:19, 9 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
