The word also exists in Estonian, with the same spelling (verst), but as far as I know, it seems to be used colloquially for a kilometre. PeepP 19:21, 14 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

poem gone, article still messy

edit

Nice as the Berger poem was, it wasn't relevant so I've done away with it. The article still needs better formatting. - Metalello talk 07:36, 21 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

From https://books.google.com/books?id=ZKsEAAAAQAAJ&pg=PA105&lpg=PA105&dq=persian+colonies+siberia&source=bl&ots=WDShApJGWh&sig=lEvHgXxtyLzzIap1KezlRiaRlqw&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiO2cXG9ubLAhVIs4MKHf5lCkUQ6AEIMjAF#v=onepage&q=persian%20colonies%20siberia&f=false page 110 "The distance from Ourangje to Khiwa is stated at seventy wersts" This book is from the 1800s. Probably an archaic spelling. In context it is referring to an area under Russian influence i.e. Central Asia & Caspian Sea. [Khiwa is modern Khiva is Uzbekistan] 104.246.47.236 (talk) 23:40, 29 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
