I've tried finding the answers to this question, but why did the Delta Works include closing off this sea arm and from both directions, no less? I guess I can get why the Veerse Gatdam was built on the western end if they were trying to close off the Eastern Schelde to the sea. But why was the Zandkreekdam constructed? Is its creation purely for recreational purposes, or is there some flood protection purpose I'm not understanding? --Criticalthinker (talk) 05:38, 23 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
The Zandkreekdam was not neccesarily constructed to protect from sea floods, but for drainage purposes. By constructing the lock in the Zandkreekdam, the water level in the Veerse Meer can be regulated. Since a lot of polders in Walcheren, Noord- en Zuid-Beveland drain towards the Veerse Meer, this is an important drainage tool. Also, if there was no Zandkreekdam, the tide would have a very large effect inside the Veerse meer, which it doesn't have now. Wasschappelaer (talk) 12:01, 20 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
I did some research found the answer to this later, as seen by my subsequent edits of the page. What I did not initially understand was that the Oosterscheldekering was constructed much later, so that the Veerse Meer would have still been open to the sea and susceptible to tides at the time the Veerse Gatdam was completed.
