Does any body know the history of UBSCR? if so please please please add some info to the page :-) rfwebster (talk) 12:50, 22 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

I was contemplating changing the committee to the new 2010 one but hesitated as I did not know the date they were elected. I suppose that isn't all that necessary but thought I'd wait to see. It is also quite late in the day. TeaStew (talk) 01:56, 12 May 2010 (UTC) -- Hi TeaStew, just updated the Committee :-) 92.237.152.172 (talk) 11:30, 30 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Proposed Deletion of UBSCR edit

Hello, I disagree with the following points raised about the notability of UBSCR:

  • "...failed to find significant coverage in reliable sources..." The University of Bristol News is quite reliable I would have said and as far as I can tell from reading Wikipedia:RS.
  • "...web searches for news coverage, books, and journals..." There is a published book, and UBSCR can be found on several webpages, such as The Ringing World (an independent weekly bell ringing journal), a google book search (provides two independent sources), Central Council of Church Bell Ringers (The body set up to govern Church bell ringing in 1891 recognises UBSCR) and Campanophile (an independent record of peals rung and a search of this site provides a list of the peals rung by UBSCR)

NB I am not angry and sorry if my tone suggests I am, I understand you are doing a valid job on wikipedia, but I reckon the page is sufficiently backed up.

    • I don't think you sound angry at all. Anyway, in-house sources such as the University's own webpage or the Society's own history book have limited value in assessing the notability of a topic. Sources such as the BBC are much better, but in this case don't mention the Society by name, and mention other bells as well. The other sources you gave look like directory listings to me (in other words, primary sources), suitable for verification purposes but lacking the analysis required of secondary sources. See WP:PSTS. Finally, the article is without what is termed a "claim of notability", a statement of why this particular bell ringing group is noteworthy. So the tag is a way of suggesting that more sources are needed. Typically, these sources can be found in the microfiche archives of newspapers that haven't made it online yet.
