The Brittanica Book of the Year for 1964 contains the term "office of education" at its Education entry, which suggests that the term "office of education" continued to be the official name of the unit from the 1870s to 1979 when the name became United States Department of Education and the Commissioner of Education became the Secretary of Education. In 1972 a multipartite law was enacted. One section of the law repealed the law which had created the United States Office of Education. Another section repealed the law which had created the Commissioner of Education. Both repeals took effect on July 1, 1972. Section 301 (b) (2) (A) of Pub. L. 92-318 provided that the repeal is effective July 1, 1972. Another section became highly controversial; it involved Congresswoman Patsy Mink, who wrote the "sex discrimination" section of the new law. GhostofSuperslum 17:40, 25 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
