The Theatre Royal in Hope Street, Glasgow is the largest theatre development in the city and was started by James Baylis in 1867 who opened it as the Royal Colosseum. His development also included the Alexandra Music Hall on the first floor above the main theatre entrance corridor which was in Cowcaddens Street. Shops were on the ground floor in Hope Street and Cowcaddens, eventually becoming absorbed into the theatre areas. The Baylis Trust continued to own the Theatre Royal until 1877. Glover & Francis became lessees, not owners.

The Theatre Royal is the birthplace of Howard & Wyndham Ltd in 1895 created by chairman Baillie Michael Simons of Glasgow, the company becoming the largest quality theatre group in Scotland and England.
