Game Notes for Individual Games edit

I have added notes recently and through the years to individual games based on the school paper accounts of these games, which are available through the archives of the Brown & White (Lehigh) and The Lafayette. Should these be credited as such? Or should there be links to individual games? Cgburton 15:43, 16 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Record of Wins/Losses edit

I know I've seen it somewhere online but I can't seem to find the total history for every game played in the rivalry. Please help me to complete this page. Plm209 18:57, 15 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I extracted it from a Lafayette football media guide and manipulated it in in Excel. Please proofread it to make sure I don't transpose anything. GCW50 01:33, 23 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I also removed the color coding for brown and red. While cute, it violates Wikipedia guidelines.

Also can we change the article title to "The Rivalry"? The media guides refer to it as that and we thus could further cement our claim on it just like "The Game" article does for Harvard-Yale. GCW50 14:00, 22 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Lehigh-Lafayette Rivalry edit

I reverted the vandalism and changed it back to the original title. That way it's consistent with all of the other Wikipedia article references to it that I had originally created. However, In fairness, I also changed the link on the Lafayette College page so it displays it there as "Lafayette-Lehigh Rivalry" but still directs here. Hopefully, that's a workable compromise. As my brother went to Lafayette, I know they obviously refer to it as the "Lehigh" Game.

Until folks from Lafayette have actually added more content to this page than Lehigh folks (who so far have contributed EVERYTHING), it will stay as the Lehigh-Lafayette Rivalry. GCW50 02:47, 23 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Name of article edit

I think we should really consolidate both the Lehigh-Lafayette and Lafayette-Lehigh rivalry pages into one sing page titled "The Rivalry" and redirect to that page. This way, both pages are not the exact same thing (save the first sentence) and both do not have to be updated. What does everyone think about this issue?? (I have also posted this on the Lafayette-Lehigh page for those who do not read this page) Plm209 22:48, 19 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Consolidation edit

As suggested, it's been renamed The Rivalry and consolidated. The links on both schools pages now refer to it this way. Let's try and get the Brown and White and The Lafayette as well as both sports information departments to use this one term more consistently.

Try to keep the article neutral. As an aside, I'm Lehigh '72 and my brother is Lafayette '76, so I understand both sides. If you can't get to the game in person, joint Lehigh Lafayette alumni game parties are a blast.

GCW50 14:34, 20 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Elaboration edit

Anyone know why they didn't play in 1896? Also, if someone could check each years score, I'd appreciate it. I manually typed them in. GCW50 14:34, 20 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Also, as I reside in the Wilkes-Barre, PA area, where was the 1891 game 16 game played in WB? Why was it played at this site? Plm209 21:14, 25 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Linkages edit

If you can find more references to "Lehigh-Lafayette" or "Lafayette-Lehigh" to change to "The Rivalry" throughout Wikipedia, please do so. GCW50 14:34, 20 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Two bald guys fighting over a comb? edit

I came here hoping for a list of major college football rivalries. Like, for instance USC vs. Notre Dame. Instead I get Lehigh vs. Lafayette -- two bald guys fighting over a comb.

Then you went to the wrong page. What you describe is already listed elsewhere; see the college football rivalry category link at the bottom of the page.
Whether the two minor-league professional football teams you mention really are made of college students (people who study the same subjects, take the same exams and graduate the same rate as the other students at their college) is what's debatable. GCW50 20:53, 15 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
I concur Plm209 21:38, 15 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Neutrality edit

Why is the neutrality of this article being disputed? Could you please cite the outlandish statements that you see? I would be happy to help clarify/dispute them. Plm209 20:34, 13 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:First Lehigh-Lafayette Match.jpg edit

Image:First Lehigh-Lafayette Match.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Image copyright problem with Image:LehighMountainHawks.png edit

The image Image:LehighMountainHawks.png is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
  • That this article is linked to from the image description page.

Lehigh-Lafayette or Lafayette-Lehigh edit

I noticed that this article was moved from Leh-Laf to Laf-Leh yesterday. There was no discussion on the move, nor is there anything in the talk page that suggests it be moved. I suspect it was done by a proud Lafayette student or alum with no real reason. I won't revert/move back because I really don't know what's involved with such a change, and don't want to upset the Wiki community. (Besides, I'm a proud Lehigh alum and don't want to come across as arrogant). I believe this should be moved back to Lehigh-Lafayette for no other reason than there was no documented reason to move it in the first place. Can anyone do this, or justify it for me? Sme3 (talk) 17:08, 20 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Done. Thanks for pointing this out. It's not the first time it's happened, and it probably won't be the last. But apparently Wikipedia naming conventions encourage keeping the teams' names in the title, so we don't have an easy out. –Sarregouset (talk) 20:58, 21 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. Also, I try to be neutral as I went to Lehigh and my brother went to Lafayette. Sequence in this case doesn't indicate any superior position.
When we pronounce things out loud, the two syllable "Lehigh" followed by the three syllable "Lafayette" rhythym works better due to the rise in accent in "Lehigh" and the middle syllable accent in "Lafayette", making the entire phase rolling and uplifting. I suspect that's why most of the books and articles written about the series by neutral party newspapers and magazines usually write it "Lehigh-Lafayette" instead of "Lafayette-Lehigh", when simple alphabetical order would normally reverse them. I've heard Lafayette alumni refer to it as "Lehigh-Lafayette" and most of the joint alumni gatherings around the world also refer to it that way. GCW50 (talk) 21:29, 23 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Agreed. I believe, if not referring to this game as "The Rivalry", it really should be seen as Lehigh-Lafayette, on historical, and phonetic, grounds. (John G. Lewis (talk) 17:36, 6 March 2014 (UTC))Reply

My daughter attends Lafayette and, according to her, the conventional alias for "The Rivalry" at Lafayette is "The Laf-Lehigh Game". As such, including an alias such as "Lehigh-Lafayette" in the title carries with it an implicit bias towards the students and alumni of only one of the schools involved. I would suggest that if Wikipedia standards require the names of the two schools to be in the title, some means of satisfying this requirement in an unbiased manner should be sought. I would like to suggest the following as an alternative: "The Rivalry (Lehigh University, Lafayette College)" I feel this would be a far less controversial approach. As it would add color to the article, perhaps the alternate aliases of "Le-Laf", "Lehigh-Lafayette", "Laf-Lehigh" for the game used by students and alums from each school could be incorporated. I also think that a section should be added regarding the respective "spirit weeks" held by each school which could include photos of the student-made banners mocking the opposing school and other fun traditions (e.g. civil engineers crushing beams with the other school's name painted on them).Ksmell (talk) 01:10, 24 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Separate Football Article edit

Would it be better to move most of the detailed football information to it's own page as The Rivalry article is not solely focused on football but all aspects of the rivalry between the two schools? A good example may be the Harvard-Yale Football Rivalry or Army-Navy Game article. Dwalterc (talk) 05:04, 23 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

  • Comment : I'm on the fence about this one. There's a lot of information to put in the football article, and it would be nice to not have to clarify that each time, but what would go in the regular article (this one). Other than some win/loss statistics, and perhaps a cited statement from Barron's or one of the other college guides talking about the (academic) competition for students, there's really not a lot to say in it. Would you leave it as a WP:STUB? Me Three (talk to me) 13:34, 24 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • Comment: As a Pennsylvanian with no direct connection to Lehigh or Lafayette, I think that this page should be only about the football rivalry. I'm sure the rest of the rivalry looks important from the campuses, but frankly I think that it fails to meet Wikipedia's notability criteria. —Preceding unsigned comment added by JoDu987 (talkcontribs) 20:45, 28 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
  • Comment I am going to the game today, and will encourage classmates to comment here. GO LEOPARDS! Beat Lehigh! --DThomsen8 (talk) 13:08, 20 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
  • Late comment The football game is known by the world and campuses as The Rivalry. Match-ups between baseball, soccer, lacrosse teams are not called The Rivalry by anyone, even students at the school, so it would be inappropriate to change the page to reflect any other sport than football. Copyright problems under Memorable moments section edit

The sections 'Longest Run' and 'The Catch' under 'Memorable moments' seem to have been directly lifted from [1]. I've added the appropriate template over those two sections and reported it on WP:Copyright problems. --Aka042 (talk) 07:25, 23 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

I've taken care of the copyright violation. I rewrote the sections and added a second citation for each, in addition to the Game Notes to which you linked above. Good catch Aka042. Me Three (talk to me) 02:49, 25 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
I see I shouldn't have done that... I undid my change and posted it, as per the rules, to Talk:The Rivalry (Lehigh–Lafayette)/Temp. Hopefully an admin can see this and insert it into the main article. I also posted a notice to that effect on WP:Copyright problems. Me Three (talk to me) 02:59, 25 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

New infobox edit

Added a new infobox. It doesn't matter which team is listed first, but I put them alphabetically as that's the way the infobox is sorted out across all its other uses. Looking at this page I see it's a sore topic.. I have no idea why.. but in any case that's the rationale. SEMMENDINGER (talk) 23:46, 22 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

"Formerly" longest uninterrupted edit

I do not fully comprehend the inclusion of language implying that the rivalry has lost its "longest uninterrupted" crown. The logic I assume is it was "interrupted" by the COVID rescheduling to spring 2021, but would that not be part of the 2020-21 NCAA season and thus qualify?

I note this solely because this is the only spot I've seen the streak referred to as "formerly longest uninterrupted." I'm not sure popular opinion would bear this out nor would it really qualify as "interrupted" rather than just "rescheduled."

MrTheSpork 21:12, 12 April 2021 (UTC)

It's a great question that we likely need an official response from the NCAA about. Sort of like the fine print on this page. SEMMENDINGER (talk) 23:55, 12 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Topic is incorrectly named edit

It’s Lehigh-Lafayette. No one calls it Lafayette-Lehigh 24.188.193.55 (talk) 17:19, 20 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

It's named this way due to naming conventions on Wikipedia, i.e. alphabetically. This has been a topic of discussion going back to 2006, I invite you to read the posts above your own. And for the record, I hardly ever hear it called Lehigh-Lafayette either- it's either Le-Laf or Laf-Lehigh. :) SEMMENDINGER (talk) 14:54, 22 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
