• Is it certain that they're autistic and not mentally retarded? Just checking, because I never really saw them display characteristics of autism. 68.59.137.126 01:06, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

I agree, it's definitely not autism in any way. Autistic people are often non-verbal and do not have the kind of interests in social relationships that Carla has. They even use the term "retarded" early on in the movie. (Her father says "I don't want her to be retarded.") That's not how autistic people are referred to.
