Just added a major update. Would love to hear from anyone who can shed more light on the depopulation point I raise in the article. I know Tad had a much larger population in previous decades but the exact reason for the decline, aside from a leaflet I once read regarding the importance of the Wharfe for transport, is unclear. I have changed the comments about the population of Tadcaster as a bit of research at the source for this information shows the confusion that can be caused by equating the current town of Tadcaster to the various historical administrative units with the name Tadcaster. So the comment about the fall in population is just complete nonsense. In fact I suspect if you took the geographical area of the Tadcaster Registration District in 1911, I think you would find that as Leeds has spread into areas once denominated as Tadcaster the population has multiplied several times over.

I also added the point about Tadcaster being mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles. The interesting point about this is the reference to the navy. Today we assume that Tadcaster was important because of its bridge, but possibly in Roman times and up to the early Middle Ages it might have also been important as a port. Of course there is no proof of this, but it is something to bear in mind.

Railway in Tadcaster

Did the Tadcaster Viaduct ever carry passenger trains? Has there ever been a railway station in Tadcaster? Did the Micklethorpe to Church Fenton go via Tadcaster?
