[[Category:My wife and I crossed from Portsmouth to Ryde pier that same afternoon the day the TSMV Shanklin had collided with the pier in thick fog. As was our habit we walked down the pier to the bus stop on Ryde Esplanade but on this occasion a diversion led us up onto a catwalk beside the railway track, then back down onto the wooden roadway. When we heard the national news we learnt the reason for the detour. I seem to remember the taxi driver was interviewed and when asked what he had to say about the incident he said "Well just as I drove over the edge into the water I had to be very careful what I said as my fare was a vicar". Can anyone confirm this?]]
