The details appearing in the main page is quite informative. It can be further improved by adding particulars of Surat Special Economic Zone situated at Diamond Park, MIDC area, Sachin near Surat. There are over 175 industrial units located in this Zone. Should you desire these particulars can be provided.

To build up such a vast kingdom independently and to rule it with an army and a navy, Shivaji needed lots of money. Where could he hope to obtain so much wealth for the purpose? He decided to extract this money from Aurangzeb himself who was enjoying the wealth of this country.
In those days Surat was known to be almost the city of Kubera, the God of Wealth. So he attacked Surat on one occasion and then emptied the city of its great wealth.vkvora 19:10, 6 May 2007 (UTC)

Surat the city of Kubera

1664 In this year Shivaji sacks Surat, leaving with booty worth Rupees 10 million. [At the time, Rupees 5 purchased a milch cow and was a decent cash wage for a year.]

What is OpenID? OpenID is an open, decentralized, free framework for user-centric digital identity. OpenID starts with the concept that anyone can identify themselves on the Internet the same way websites do-with a URI (also called a URL or web address). Since URIs are at the very core of Web architecture, they provide a solid foundation for user-centric identity. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.9.137.3 (talk) 06:47, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

May be no body knows that Surat Railway Station is Asia's First Railway Station officially Situated on the First Floor. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 116.74.120.110 (talk) 04:09, 2 February 2010 (UTC)

although surat is the fastest growing city of asia, the infrasturcture of city still not up to mark. u can see the railway station and airport of city. surat has only 4 railway platform. and the condition of railway station is also poor. the population ofcity is around 60 lack. but the facility the city deserves, not got yet. this is all because of local leaders. they are failure at all level.

Besides Diamond & Textiles, Surat is world largest producer of 'Handicraft' ZARI, ALLIED ZARI PRODUCTS & ZARI MADE-UPS namely Laces, Borders, Ribbons, Trimmings, Braids etc... Surat Zari Association has applied for G.I. registration through Textile committee of Ministry of Textiles (GOI) & will soon get this unique identification. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.95.198.17 (talk) 07:40, 26 December 2009 (UTC)

Lakhs and Crores

It would be better if figures such as those quoted in this article (property damage estimated at Rs 22,000 cr on that day) could be stated in thousands, millions, billions, and so on; to anyone outside the area of India the abbreviation cr is baffling, and even if the word crore (or lakh) is written in full, it only means anything if the person is somehow familiar with India and its immediate neighbours. Surat plans 30-floor building ‘The Hub’ as an Icon of the city

If everything goes according to plan, the southern Gujarat city - Surat will have 30-floor building at a cost of Rs500 crore on 21,000 sq.m. plot at Surat-Navsari road’s Kharvarnagar junction where two routes of proposed BRTS corridor are going to meet.

Surat Municipal Commissioner madam Aparna revealed this dream project and said the Chief Minister and Principal Secretary of Urban Development Ministry have already approved this project in principal.

Aparna said, “at present a building higher than 40 meter is not permitted in Surat. We will have to get special permission for this building. This 100 meter iconic building will become an identity of Surat city. Temporarily it has been named as ‘The Hub’ project. While the main building will be a public place with open air theater, art gallery, library, multiplex, food court, walk way etc. amenities, the two adjoining 40 metre buildings will also be constructed for commercial use.”

“The project will be carried our under ‘Transit oriented development plan’. While BRTS buses will run on subsidize rate, the income from proposed building - The Hub - will keep BRTS running through Urban Transport Fund,” madam Aparna added.

The design of proposed building - The Hub - has been prepared by Ahmedabad’s CEPT University and Surat based Snehal Shah. The building will reflect Surat’s two main industries - Diamond and Textile. 30-floor building will have a diamond shaped revolving hotel on top floor. The shinning of this diamond shaped structure would be visible all across the city and even beyond.

Presently, the BRTS work is going on between Sarthana to Dumas resort and Udhana darwaja to Sachin. Kharvarnagar is located in the centre of Surat’s industrial and commercial activities. Textile market, University, Sachin and Pandesara’s industrial estates are nearby. It is envisaged that around 6 lakh commuters will pass from Kharvarnagar junction every day in year 2021. This means every hour 100 to 150 cars will pass from here. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 116.74.118.141 (talk) 05:38, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

conjectured prehistory

The prehistoric reference to Krishna stopping there is not authenticated by any reference. ("on way to Dwarka"???, on the way from where? Kurukshetra is in the North.) The name Suryanagari also seems pure conjecture. Quoting popular beliefs or wishful thinking only brings down the reliability of an article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Powstini (talkcontribs) 04:08, 14 January 2011 (UTC)

Cemetaries under History section ?

Removing cemeteries from History section. The content is not only "un-cited" but also misplaced. Master purav (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 14:15, 5 January 2012 (UTC).

Third paragraph

In the third paragraph in this article, we read:

"The city is largely recognized for its textile and diamond businesses. It is also known as the diamond capital of the world and the textile capital/Manchester textile city of India, a distinction it took over from Ahmedabad."

The phrase "the textile capital/Manchester textile city of India" is not clear. The slash (/) does not explain very much. The word "or" would be better, but even with that, the second half of that phrase, "Manchester textile city" is not clear to the general reader. Could someone who knows about the subject clarify this?CorinneSD (talk) 21:55, 13 September 2013 (UTC)

History

In the first paragraph in the section headed "History", we read the following sentence:

"The Parsis started to settle there from the 8th century onward, and added greatly to its prosperity, with there having been a thriving sea trade between Iran and Gujarat, owing to the famous Silk Route."

This sentence is not clear. It is not clear what the connection is between the "thriving sea trade" and the Parsis adding greatly to its (Surat's) prosperity. Even the chronological, or time, connection is not clear. It would be nice if someone who knows the subject matter could work on this sentence. It would be best to avoid using the participles ("having been" and "owing to").CorinneSD (talk) 15:32, 18 September 2013 (UTC)

History

In the second paragraph in the section "History", we read, "bla bla bla". Could someone add a bit of information to tell the general reader who this person was? yes but i dont know.CorinneSD (talk) 15:36, 18 September 2013 (UTC)

History

The third paragraph in the section headed "History" is as follows:

"In the early centuries during the reign of a Maratha King, the port of Surat was used as the gateway to Mecca for pilgrims of the Hajj from India's interior regions. Both the Makkai Pul and the Mughal Sarai guest house for hajjis (pilgrims) are indicators of this historical function."

Is "Makkai Pul" the name of a guest house? If so, "guest house" needs to be changed to plural: "guest houses". If it is not a guest house, "the Makkai Pul" needs to be explained.CorinneSD (talk) 15:42, 18 September 2013 (UTC)

History

In the fourth paragraph in the section headed "History", we read:

"In 1512 and 1530 Surat was burned and ravaged by the Portuguese Empire who were trying to maintain influence in the area."

It sounds odd to use the relative pronoun "who" to refer to an empire. Added to this is the plural verb "were" which, although in British English may refer to a collective noun (such as "jury" or "orchestra"), still sounds odd when paired with "empire". It would be more informative if more precise nouns could be used to identify the people who burned and ravaged Surat.CorinneSD (talk) 15:52, 18 September 2013 (UTC)

History

In the sixth paragraph in the section "History", we read the following sentence:

"The city was made the seat of a presidency of the East India Company after the success of the embassy God of Wealth."

The phrase "the embassy God of Wealth" really needs to be explained. It is incomprehensible to the general reader.

Also, there are quite a few very short paragraphs in this section. Perhaps some of them could be combined and some sentences organized a bit better (according to time and/or subject matter).CorinneSD (talk) 16:12, 18 September 2013 (UTC)

History

The first sentence of the last paragraph in the "History" section is as follows:

"Surat is also home to the royal descendants of the Amejee family which settled in Gujarat."

I'm just wondering if this is correct. Are they really "royal descendants", or should it be, "the descendants of the royal Amejee family..."? I don't care either way. I'm just wondering.CorinneSD (talk) 16:49, 18 September 2013 (UTC)

Textiles

In the section headed "Textiles", we read the following sentence:

"Surat is the largest manufacturer of clothes in India, and Surti dress material can be found in any state of India."

Is "Surti" correct? I did not see that word anywhere else in this article.CorinneSD (talk) 17:10, 18 September 2013 (UTC)

I don't think it's mentioned in the article, but the word "Surti" is indeed a demonym for Surat. I don't have a source for this, but it's common knowledge within Gujarat. SillyBunnies (talk) 14:52, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
O.K. Thank you for the information. Many country articles show the demonym in the info box near the beginning of the article, but I don't know how to add it. I'd also just like to point out that the demonym is the name of the people of a country (and I guess also of a city, state, or province). The same word can also often be used as an adjective to describe things like cuisine, dress, and customs, as in this case: "Surti dress material". However, the demonym and the adjective for things is not always the same word as we learn in the article List of adjectival and demonymic forms for countries and nations. For example, the demonym for England is "Briton(s)" and the adjective is "British"; the demonym for Turkey is "Turk(s)" and the adjective is "Turkish". Perhaps someone who knows how to insert the demonym in an info box could add "Surti" for Surat. If not, perhaps it could be added to the lead/lede. CorinneSD (talk) 16:17, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
Ah, I didn't know about the distinction between adjectives and demonyms; that's interesting. Also, I added the demonym for Surat in the info box, under the metro population. SillyBunnies (talk) 01:54, 19 March 2014 (UTC)
Great! I also re-worked the paragraph on Textiles and added a link at "Surti". CorinneSD (talk) 15:07, 19 March 2014 (UTC)
On March 20, 2014, I received a notification that the link I added requires disambiguation. I don't know what to do.CorinneSD (talk) 02:16, 25 March 2014 (UTC)
Per advice of User talk:Rothorpe, removed link at "Surti" in the section "Textiles". It is sufficient that "Surti" is listed in the info box as the demonym for Surat. CorinneSD (talk) 03:12, 25 March 2014 (UTC)

Incorrect Climate Info

As of 15 March 2014, the information listed in the "Record High" and "Record Low" sections of the Weather Box is incorrect. This incorrect info comes from the following source (Voodoo Skies):

http://voodooskies.com/weather/india/surat

For example, this website shows that Surat once recorded a temperature of 1049C, which is highly implausible since official meteorological records show that the highest temperature ever recorded in the entire country of India is 5000C, far away from Surat. Therefore I am replacing the incorrect values with ones from a more credible and official source (India Meteorological Department):

http://www.imdpune.gov.in/Temp_Extremes/histext2010.pdf.

Perhaps it is worth noting that the article "Vadodara" had the same issue. SillyBunnies (talk) 06:23, 16 March 2014 (UTC)

Athwa Gate

There is a photo with a caption "Athwa Gate", but nowhere in the article does it mention either "Athwa Gate" or "Athwa". It only mentions "Athwalines" several times. What is "Athwa Gate", and/or "Athwa"? CorinneSD (talk) 18:41, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

Athwa Gate is the entry point of surat-dummas road passing through athwalines. There is no gate like structure there, but it is known as such. If you refer google map I think it would be clear.Rukn950 (talk) 05:54, 25 May 2014 (UTC)

I suggest you add that piece of information to an appropriate place in the article or briefly in the caption. CorinneSD (talk) 22:50, 25 May 2014 (UTC)

Magic squares

I do not see an obvious place to mention it, but the so-called Siamese method of constructing magic squares in mathematics was in fact attributed in the 17th century to Surat. --Rumping (talk) 13:07, 20 December 2015 (UTC)

Surat / Magdalla Port:- The articles is the best with respect to the details of Surat City and its neighbour-hood, but what it surprises is that under the heading of the PORTS, the details regarding the port of Surat that is MAGDALLA PORT is totally missing. Why an attempted should not be made to bring more or less details of the relevant heading? It seems there is some essential theme that is required to make the topics & sub-topics more powerful and detailed one.As I feel that the sea Port means the actual place/ publicly notified area where landing/loading of merchandise cargo takes place; and embarkment/disembarkment of the passenger is permitted.

Surat / Rainfall: The "Geography" section suggests that "The climate is tropical and monsoon rainfall is abundant (about 2,500 mm a year)". This is WRONG! The correct amount of rainfall is 1065mm as mentioned in the "Climate" section. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.179.100.185 (talk) 16:51, 12 May 2012 (UTC)

Surat article has a lot of Boasting content and very little neutrality

This article content shows a lot of boasting and bragging. Words such as Best city, 4th fastest growing city in the world, Cleanest city in India shows a lot of boasting, without neutral Point of View (POV).
