The Boys'School of St. Paul's Parish was founded February 9,1849. The rectorship of the Boys' School of St. Paul's Parish. which was "one of the [first] 30 parishes incorporated in this country in 1692," belongs to Rev. Dr. E. Wyatt. In the mid 19th century, the middle class citizenry of Baltimore City did not possess a form of free education for their boys. ¹ The schools original intent and purpose are found in the words of Dr. E. Wyatt:

There are thousands of boys of a high...grade and better capabilities who have had in childhood a more careful nurture, and are in other ways good subjects for liberal education, who yet fail of their high calling for want of a helping hand to lead them onward. This class we have more particuarly in view in our present undertaking. We propose first of all a Chrisitian home. The family, under the direction of the Trustees and of the Rector of St. Paul's, will receive systematic instrustion in the Scriptures, and in Religious Knowledge and Habits generally. Particular pains will be taken to mantain a high moral and religious character among the pupils; and no boy persistently bad will be allowed to remain in their number...Constant practice in Church Music will not be forgotten. Provision has been made for solid instruction in the elements of a good substantial English education. It is part of our plan, however, that where a boy shows a capacity for a higher training, he shall be well grounded in Greek, Latin, and Mathematics, so as to be fitted for Teaching, for the Ministry or forany walk of life to which it may please God to call him...It is not intended to be a mere place of refuge for poor boys; it is intended to be a place for right intellectural training.²

Since the school's intecption on Saratooga and Charles Streets, St. Paul's has relocated frequently throughout it's history. The rising attendance of the school resulted in the relocation to 8 and 10 East Franklin Street and eventually to Mount Washington in 1923.³ The present day location of St. Paul's resides at the "former Issac Emerson estate on the Falls road 10 miles from Old St. Paul's Episcopal Church at Saratooga and Charles streets where the school was founded in 1849,"in Brooklandwood.⁴ On January 21, 1954 the St. Paul's community commenced on the creation of a $180,000 gynasium in "honor of the former rector of Old St. Paul's Church." St. Paul's gymnasium architect, William F. Stone Jr., was also in charge of the artful designs that transformed the classic "old structures on campus" into classrooms. ⁵

St. Paul's was highly recognized for the choir it had established in 1870. Frank L. LaMotte states that St. Paul's "has served this community in notable fashion and has been particuarly outstanding for its contribution to fine church music through its uniterrupted service as the first boys choral school in the country."⁶ After 100 years, St. Paul's continued its legacy of excellence by maintaining a strong choir that achieved national recognition. The 1949 choir was "considered to be the finest in the country"⁷ numbering 30 members and headed by Edmund S. Ender.
