[Untitled] edit

I am a student of St.Patrick's school

I Have studied in St Patricks H.S. Asansol from KG till class XII( Left SPS in class VI to study in Ramkrishna Mission- Narendrapur till VII and cane back again to St Pat's to join in class IX). Passed in 1974. After say about 35 years passing out from School I could locate only Dr. S.K Mookim my section mate and batch mate in Sec-A. Mr D. Shaw was our class teacher from 1X to X11 in Sec-A.

Mr Ambrose was our History teacher in class 1X, and ofcourse Mr Gunnion-Sr was our Science(Physics+Chemistry)from 1X to X11 in Sec-A. Our Topper was mainly Anindiya Datta and Mookim. It is my fault that I did not join SPOBA much earlier. I know Tinku Kapoor as he was in the same batch in Sec-B. We traveled in the same school bus for years together as my father was in Bengal Coal Company Ltd then all Coal fields were Nationalized. I remember Som,Asish Rungta, Prabhat Mishra (with whom I had family ties).Prabhat is the Chief Engg in Singrallei Coalmines at MP. My brother ( Monojit Das Gupta) was 2 years junior to me in SPS and was a good in sports. He is now Engg with Railways. 'Anyway I hope I can contact some of my old section pals some day.' At present I am in Kolkata, working as Divisional Sales Manager for a Pharmaceutical Company. Looking forward to meeting my batchmates sometime. My email ID is biswajitbdg@sify.com.

Changes edit

I could never have imagined that someone from St. Patrick's School could indulge in tomfoolery and make changes that do not concern them. I hope common sense will prevail over their blurred imagination. SPOBA is the basic organisation of the Old Boys' of St. Patrick's School and its working under the school's crest. People are referring it as a Chapter with ulterior motive. Its not chapter, its the main pioneering organisation working in and around the school. The rest of the old boys' organisations have come much later and that too with the blessings of SPOBA. Wikipedia has given everyone the opportunity to place correct information. If people have ulterior motives its sad for the school site on Wikipedia. If you have problems put it on the discussion board for all to see and discuss. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Asit Madeka (talkcontribs) 16:47, 3 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Edit War edit

I am not familiar with the earlier 'edit wars', but am an alumnus who was given some background info by other alumni and I strongly support the bigger alumni group being listed as the default one as opposed to a city chapter - to cause less confusion to alumni. The views in "Changes" above does not contradict anything here - the chapter is an older body, a pioneer, but it's still a chapter in Asansol. Whether it had SPOBA's blessings or not, SPAI sprung up independently and has become the largest alumni body. I've recently tried to prevent vandalism by the 59.93 person. From what I've seen the two worldviews are completely at odds with each other, so seek 3rd party involvement and protection of the article when it comes to alumni matters. The larger group has a website (http://www.spsalumni.org) which although still looking like a work in progress is more current than the smaller group (http://www.spoba.org) which was last updated over a year ago (evident from the news). The leadership list has changed a couple of times since from what I've seen in Facebook & elsewhere. The logo even mentions the name of the city its a chapter of - Asansol - we shouldn't be listing alumni chapters of individual cities in Wikipedia! SPAI is an alumni body that has representation from all over the world, including the home country, India: http://spsalumni.org/node/21. The chapter, SPOBA Asansol, has a leadership all drawn from one city - Asansol: http://www.spoba.org/office_bearers.php. The support for the 1,300 number comes from this: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/patricks/. An alumni org is supposed to represent alumni, more than the school itself. Alumni affairs are not handled by SPS itself, so it leaves it to independently functioning bodies. The link to SPOBA from the school's website (both SPAI and SPOBA used to be linked there) suggests some influence on an individual basis at the school, but still not outweighing the credibility that a body of thousands of alumni of that school have - not even SPOBA would deny that SPAI is the largest. It makes little sense to suggest SPAI is not related to SPS, and remove it from under "Related Links". Would prefer it's protected by itself. If admins decide otherwise, you could list both bodies, including only factual data comparing them that would be useful to alumni who find this article. Here's a suggested version:

  • SPAI, or St. Patrick's Alumni International, is the largest organisation of SPS Asansol alumni. Its membership is over 1,300 from India and around the world. Those who have studied at SPS are eligible. Joining is free; donations are optional. The website is spsalumni.org.
  • SPOBA, or St. Patrick's Old Boys Association, is an Asansol-based chapter of SPS alumni. It was founded in the late 1980s. One can join for a membership fee. Those who passed out of SPS are eligible. The website is spoba.org.

In the meantime, I will vigorously protect this article from edits that remove SPAI - until admins can intervene and protect the article.

I hope that including a city alumni chapter is seen as unnecessary and excessive - we may end up seeing a whole list of them eventually, tailing this article. A school should have a single alumni body representing most alumni. Since the school is not handling alumni relations directly, it should be the largest, most representative body. And not confuse alumni. Would request this article be protected so that admins have to review changes before they are accepted. Am not very familiar with more complex things in wikipedia like protection. Thanks for all your hard work! Iluvkolkata (talk) 21:28, 1 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

As the (now somewhat-less-uninvolved) editor who brought this up at WP:AN3, I see no reason not to endorse Iluvkolkata's proposed side-by-side listing of the alumni groups. In line with Wikipedia conventions, if more details on the two groups than just weblinks is provided, it would be sensible to title the section Alumni organisations or something similar, and include the website addresses separately as an External Links section (or possibly as a reflist for the statements concerning the two groups, though neither meets WP:RS for this topic).
