Sorry, I'm a bit new at this, but i was wondering: how much information should there be about rules and gameplay? I mean, I can talk all day about how to play Squad Leader, but does that belong here or not? Billy Shears 19:28, 5 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Strategy and tactics probably aren't relevant to a encyclopedia entry, but check out wikibooks - they have strategy guides for boards games - see this link http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Main_Page or see the wikipedia page on Monopoly (game) for an example of how this is set up. Fair use rationale for Image:Vaslforsl.jpg edit

Image:Vaslforsl.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Fair use images edit

Most of the images on this article fail one or more criteria of our non-free policy WP:NFCC, most particularly the small images of the gameboards which are completely unnecessary for the reader to understand the article WP:NFCC#8. Multiple shots of covers are also usually deprecated (WP:NFCC#3a). It is very unusual to find an article which requires more than a few non-free images to pass our non-free criteria, and this isn't one. Black Kite 07:57, 19 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

The ASL magazine cover is not needed, as another article provides that, it is only tangential to here. We can remove it.
Even though it is specifically mentioned in the adjacent critical text and is useful and informative element to have, I suppose the original purple cover is a conceit, and could be removed.
Each cover of each expansion game should be included as unique and passes WP:NFC Acceptable use: Cover, if the article was broken into 5 separate articles, each game would have its own cover. WP:NFCC#3a, designed for character lists and album cover galleries, does not apply. The single, original sheet of playing pieces also to be included, as distinct style from other wargames and shows the unique game play as discussed. The video-game screen-shot should be included to show similarities and differences from the original game and passes WP:NFC Acceptable use: Screenshot.
The boards:One image has to be shown to show artwork, map scale, hex-system and terrain features. A least 2 should be shown to illustrate unique side-to-side and end-to-end wrap-around system as mentioned in the article. Multiple board should also be shown to illustrate the different maps have different terrain features (the "city board"). Also, each expansion pack added new terrain features, but in the same style and wrap-around system as the original game. Supported in the text and illustrated by the new game board. We could make the argument that the original game boards 1-4 is really the "one game board" that came with Squad Leader and replace the 4 with a single image but that would harm the content and gain us little.--Knulclunk (talk) 13:53, 19 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
I would suggest that most of the features of the boards could be described in text (WP:NFCC#1), unless they were particularly complex. Remember also that every single non-free image needs to pass criteria 8, in that the reader's understanding of the article would not be sgnificantly reduced if said image was removed. As an aside, I doubt if the expansion packs could be split out into separate articles as they're probably not notable in their own right (this is generally the case, although there are exceptions). Black Kite 14:08, 19 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
It is generally difficult to explain visual things in prose. It can be done, but is often never satisfactory, and many people just will not 'get it' in the same way. --Rindis (talk) 19:26, 19 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
That can be the case sometimes, but there are fifteen such images of terrain in the article, most of which are completely unhelpful to the reader anyway, because they're so small. A far better idea would be to have a single - bigger - example image of the terrain, which would give the idea to the reader whilst saving 14 non-free occurrences. Black Kite 19:37, 19 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
I think it's delicious when virtuousos like Black Kite go around trashing articles for no reason other than to exercise their imagined authority in a virtual worldspace. It only ensures that people look elsewhere than Wikipedia for entertaining information. By all means, please remove the images at the earliest possible moment because Heaven forbid the page should have any visual interest or style. You know. Like your talk page upon which skulls and oversize font types are emblazoned and festooned. We're obviously amateurs at layout and design so it's a good thing you're here to lead us into the promised land. :-) Don't forget to delete all the paragraphs that are unreferenced, unsourced and obviously original research in accordance with WP:NOR while you are at it. If the page isn't a stub by September 1st, I'll be sorely disappointed by your lack of admin sk1llz.68.144.162.78 (talk) 19:11, 26 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
