Sponge, X and Y

By the way (and this is totally off-topic, but I'm in a silly mood now), does anyone remember a book called Sponge, X and Y? It was great! Definitely deserves an article of its own. :) But for some reason, Google's Web search turns up no matches for it. I don't get it. Have I remembered the title wrongly? ? Google's Groups search turns up one match[1], but there is no sign of a reply to the person who asked about it. :( -- Oliver P. 07:41 Mar 8, 2003 (UTC)

Assuming it was a licensed product, one could try checking [http://www.amazon.com/ Amazon.com] for it. -- knoodelhed 15:31, 1 Oct 2003 (UTC)

Mrs. Puff

Isn't it just Mrs. Puff (she is married, her husband was used as a lightbulb), not Poppy or Poopy puff? KirbyMeister 11:18, 4 Jun 2004 (UTC)

I think that Mrs. Puff's first name was mentioned in only one episode, but it is definitely Poppy. Poopy Puff was a typo I made when I was updating SpongeBob SquarePants. The typo was up for a while until I noticed it and fixed it. ~ Rainer 12:25, 9 Jul 2004 (UTC) ~

ToDo: Mention the allegations that James Dobson criticised this character (he claims he did not). See that article's talk page. Mr. Jones 19:18, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Sandy Cheeks

  • ...the squirrel Sandy Cheeks, who wears a diving-suit.
  • She wears an old spacesuit...
    • Which is it?

KingTT 17:43, 12 Mar 2005 (UTC)

      • I think its a space suit -AMK152
  • It is kind of like both. The only episode where someone talks about the suit is in "Pressure". Spongebob, before racing Sandy, says he can easily out race her in that "clunky tin tube". -lima_bean_of_the_north

Ren and Stimpy

SpongeBob is the fourth Nickelodeon show to attract "older" followers (the first was Rocko's Modern Life, whose executive producer was SpongeBob creator Stephen Hillenburg, then the Kablam! skit Action League Now!, then The Angry Beavers, then SpongeBob, and after SpongeBob, The Fairly OddParents and Invader Zim took a similar role when they aired in 2001 and the former is now second only to SpongeBob in popularity).

So what about Ren & Stimpy? That began airing in '91, two years before Rocko, and it was possibly more of a hit among adults than even Zim.

Jclarke 15:04, Apr 7, 2005 (UTC)

  • I think this entire statement should be deleted. You can't really tell which ones were supposed to attract older viewers.
I added Ren & Stimpy to that part of the article.

Squidward's Taxonomic Status...

According to the Nickelodeon website, Squidward is a squid and not an octopus. 1. Anilocra - (hi!) 08:50, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

  • Just because your last name is Fisher, does not many that you are a fish. The creator of SpongeBob SquarePants, Stephen Hillenburg, specifically states that Squidward is an octopus; the Nickelodeon site's description, not created by anyone associated with the show, says that Squidward is a squid. Who are you really going to trust?
  • He's an octopus. The number of legs suggests squid, but you've got to trust the creator. He knows what he's talking about, it's his character.
Where does Hillenburg say this? Perhaps this disagreement is something that we should have in the article, no? Anilocra 12:56, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)
He states it in a written note inside the first disc on the SpongeBob SquarePants First Season DVD, in the Second Season DVD's bonus aquatics documentary, and in various commentaries on talk shows and newspapers. The difference should be and is noted in the Squidward Tentacles article. Slof 00:57, Jun 16, 2005 (UTC)
  • Squidward is an octopus. -AMK152
  • In the interview included in the Spongebob Movie DVD, Stephen Hillenburg (the creator) and several voice actors say he is an octopus, but was called squidward because a name like octo-something just didn't work. - Lima_bean_of_the_north
There was an octpus with 8 legs and looked different compared to squidward. The octopus works at the burger stand at Goo Lagoon. Seen in "Walking Small." -AMK152

Gameboy Video

  • Volume 3 is out. I don't know which episodes are on it, but it does exist.

I failed to find this article listed on the cleanup page, why was it posted on?

Manga?

Someone put that there was Spongebob merchandise related to Manga? I hope they refer to "comics" and not Manga, because Manga is made in Japan. Can someone edit that?

Cine-Manga

There are different Cine-Manga books about SpongeBob.

Closer Watch

This article has recently been picking up a lot of crap from vandals, it needs to be watched more closly.-The Masked IP Address

Terrorism?

Some people may think that the show may have some form of terrorism...

Huh? --zenohockey 03:28, 11 July 2005 (UTC)

Can you take actual quaotes from the people who say this?--The Republican 01:06, 22 September 2005 (UTC)The Republican

This "terrorism" claim seems incomprehensible. Currently the text says, "After the September 11, 2001 attacks, the show had been receiving higher ratings than usual. A few people thought that the show may have some link to terrorism, but many fans and other people believe that the paraphrased line, 'it's just a show that heals your depressions from terrible things in life' explains the rise in viewers." This seems like gibberish. Why would a rise in viewing figures imply a link to terrorism -unless you were a complete nutcase? Who made these claims? When? What exactly is the "reasoning" involved here? Paul B 21:25, 24 September 2005 (UTC)
  • you're right Paul Barlow. I've never heard anyone say anything like that on the news or anywhere else. The person who put that in must have made it up or heard it from some weird friend.

SB Joins GNR Confirmed?

Spongebob Joins Guns N' Roses was a rumor. Why was it listed as confirmed? That's a bunch of Wiki-Vandalism.

The same guy said "Spongebob Gay Spectacular" was confirmed too, which is even bigger bull.

No GNR on Nickelodeon

There's an unwritten rule on Nickelodeon that they don't air anything with "guns" in the title. This is the 1st kids network, remember. "Guns 'N Roses" is inappropriate.

No jokes about pop culture, I MEAN IT!

The creator of the show, Stephen Hillenburg confirmed in the insider guide (book), SpongeBob Exposed! that they don't do jokes about popular culture or what's happening now. The characters are isolated from the real world. NO Guns 'n Roses, Katie Couric, Metallica, Rob Zombie or Walt Disney. No refences to other cable or broadcast channels is allowed, except those of Nickelodeon, CBS, and VIACOM International. --Justin Hill

Note, they can't even mention CBS or MTV in the show. Yes, it's contracted to be limited to only a certain thingy.

Steve Hillenburg isn't in charged of the show anymore, so maybe Guns N' Roses or Metallica will be on Spongebob (that would be awesome), Ween and Pantera have already both been on the show anyway.
Ween did a song for the show, anyway. Pantera's Music was used in the show. Giuffria's Music was also used. Tiny Tim's Music was also used. They weren't really on the show. It was just their music.

Other things they don't want referenced or seen on SpongeBob

Note: You have to remember that this is a children's cartoon that also appeals to adults as well as kids.

Syndication list

I was wondering we should have a sydncation list for each country that airs SpongeBob.

"disgusting"

"More recently, SpongeBob was featured in the pro-tolerance "We Are Family" commercial. The video has sparked controversy because some conservative Christian groups believe that the We Are Family Foundation was using it to promote the normalization of homosexuality in American schools, which is disgusting."

I took the "which is disgusting" off of the end of that sentence. That's the least NPOV thing I've ever seen on Wikipedia. -Josh, September 7, 2005.

Help This Article

Someone has been screwing with the titles of the history section, "The Drymon-Cohen Era" was replaced by "Season 4", no Sparky, theres gonna be another season with Drymon and Cohen. And "Hiatus" was changed to "Reruns" and everyhthing in it was moved to the peak years section. I would like to see the original material back. Protozoic Waste

Merge

There is a technical problem with this article and its talk-page. If you type in SpongeBob SquarePants you get to a page that is nearly identical to SpongeBob SquarePants (TV show). If you then click on the discussion tab for the former article you get to this discussion page, someone having created a ridirect for Talk:SpongeBob SquarePants. If you then click back to the article you get to the SpongeBob SquarePants (TV show) article (with a merger-suggestion notice at the top) not the SpongeBob SquarePants article. As a result there are a number of inconsistent alterations accumulating between the two articles, as well as inconsistency between articles and talk pages - since there's only one talk page between the two articles. This needs to be sorted out asap. Someone recently attempted to redirect the "(tv show)" article but it was reverted. This is silly. There needs to be one article, whatever it's name is. Paul B 15:50, 25 September 2005 (UTC)

If there will only be one SpongeBob SquarePants article (which is likely), I think it should be SpongeBob SquarePants, not SpongeBob SquarePants (TV show). This talk page should be moved to Talk:SpongeBob SquarePants, and SpongeBob SquarePants (TV show) should be made a redirect. Hugh Jass 02:15, 29 September 2005 (UTC)

Number of episodes

According to this article, 64 episodes have been aired. However, there are 114 articles in Category: SpongeBob SquarePants episodes. Which one is correct? Hugh Jass 02:08, 29 September 2005 (UTC)

An episode of Spongebob Squarepants is two 11 minute shorts, which is why there are so many entries - each entry is half an episode. Some episodes only contain 1 22-minute story however. For a list on how this works, see here. Squidward2602 15:02, 29 September 2005 (UTC)

Phony/Deleted/Fake/Nonsense/Non-Created Episodes

The following episodes were a bunch of episodes added by vandals over the summer that were supposedly going to be added this season, if you see one of these episodes listed in the "Season 4" section, it is probably vandalism and should be removed.

  • Opposite Day 2
  • Good Neighbors 2 (aka Squidward's Revenge)
  • Go Jump Off The Cliff Day (aka Opposite Day 3)
  • Squidward vs. the Realty Lady (aka Opposite Day 4)
  • Sandy's Rocket 2

The Krabby Patty Secret Formula

"We never know the secret formula of a fictional krabby patty. In the movie, Plankton finds out the secret formula but we never get to know it. In the Krusty Krab Training Video, we get to know the formula but after "is", the episode ends. But i know the secret recipe/formula. The secret formula of a krabby patty is love." Bobber1.

Look, it's no secret that love is an important - vital, even - ingredient of a Krabby Patty. We simply don't know what the patties are actually made of. Therein lies the Secret Ingredient. Ppk01 18:01, 29 October 2005 (UTC)

I read that the formula is secret because the writers haven't made a recipe that is plausible. In one episode, "Plankton's Army," however, the main ingredient is plankton, though that was a trick.Davidizer13 19:48, 31 October 2005 (UTC)

I read the formula is "first the bun, then the patty, followed by ketchup, mustard, pickles, onions, lettuce, cheese, tomatoes and bun-in thet order." The extract was from a SpongeBob Trivia Book.

No, that's just how the whole hamburger is made of. When they say "the krabby patty secret formula", they mean by what the actual patty, or meat, is made of. Obviously these are one of those things not meant to be known even after the show ends. -lima_bean_of_the_north

A Paragraph Worthy of Uncyclopedia

I deleted this paragraph from the Controversy section, but I just had to preserve it.

Spongebob is a very controversial character indeed. Many of the episodes of the show Nickelodean decided were too controversial. For instance the unaired fifth season was composed entirely of an LSD flashback that Spongebob had. It is a little known fact that Spongebob faced a difficult struggle trying to kick in the early 80s. At one point he was so doped that he murdered his own father and has since struggled with the guilt of his crime. He was able to cope with his homosexuality, however, his friend Patrick did yet feel the same way. Patrick was so confused he actually though he was in love with Sandy! Spongebob, however did find love, and was able to kick his drug addiction. When his lover died of AIDs, he went again into a rapid downward spiral, this time with alcohol. In the early 90s, Patrick was finally able to admit his true feelings for Spongebob. He was successful in getting Spongebob to rehab and helping him kick his bad habits. At the end of the fifth season, the show switches back to the present. Spongebob and Patrick finally make their relationship public, get married in Massachusetts because of the new gay marriage laws, and move in the pineapple together. The wedding episode is very touching and has an amusing guest appearance made by Nathan Lane, the voice of Timon from The Lion King trilogy. [3], [4].

Theatrical Short Before Barnyard

I'm curious to see if this is real, is this actually going to happen or is it just a stupid lie?- SpongeBobDude

01/02/2006: "SpongeBob visits Barnyard"

According to the Wikipedia, a brand new SpongeBob SquarePants short will accompany fellow Nickelodeon effort Barnyard, when the CGI comedy hits theaters on October 6th.

SpongeBob Central also has the answer right here.

There will be a SpongeBob SquarePants animated short shown before the movie, Barnyard, opening October 2006!

Controversy

  • If you carefully read the reports over the gigantic "spongebob is gay" controversy a while back, it should be noted that only the media refered to spongebob as gay. The complaint raised against the ad, which featured Spongebob, had nothing to do with the cartoons itself, but the mission statement on its website, saying it supported all people regardless of orientation. The man made no references to spongebob or any other characters in the ad as being homosexual themselves. --ColgateDuck,
I am close personal friends with the creator of spongebob, Hillbung himself. We've spoken about the possibility of spongebob's homosexuality and he's stated several times that he never created spongebob with the intention of him being gay at all, but (and I quote) "perhaps a little fruity...".
I would like to point out that using the defense that Spongebob is not gay because he is "in fact, asexual, as he is a sponge (actually, sponges are able to reproduce sexually or asexually)" is quite stupid, seeing as how Spongebob is a cleansing sponge, not a sponge organism. If we were biologists, we could assume that cleaning sponges do not reproduce sexually or asexually, seeing as how they are inanimate (because they are either dead or plastic!).
Dr. James Dobson said the following:
"My brief comments at the FRC gathering were intended to express concern not about SpongeBob or Big Bird or any of their other cartoon friends, but about the way in which those childhood symbols are apparently being hijacked to promote an agenda that involves teaching homosexual propaganda to children. Nevertheless, the media jumped on the story by claiming that I had accused SpongeBob of being "gay.""[5]
So he criticized the We Are Family Foundation video, not Spongebob. This section of the article seems completely based on the BBC article it refers to. [6].
James Dobson also denies he said anything against Spongebob in another interview: [7] I'd like to point out that James Dobson, according to the Focus on the Family website, never once criticized Spongebob or any other cartoon for that but matter, but the WAFF video containing the cartoons.--Chiefmartinez 19:20, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
Shouldn't this section be shorter than the actual descriptions for the show characters and themes? This article is becoming a dumping ground for all the references on Spongebob, some of which are barely even there. The show still has a huge popularity, despite the controversies.

Controversy Section

According to the controversy setion,

In one episode, SpongeBob and Patrick have an argument, and as Patrick walks away, Spongebob yells to him, "See you next tuesday!" Many have percieved this as an abbreviated way of saying "cunt".

Could someone please explain this?

If you pronounce it, see means 'c', you means 'u', next's first letter is 'n', and Tuesday's first letter is 't', spelling 'cunt'. I didn't understand it at first, either. M2K 23:59, 1 April 2006 (UTC)
Oh--my--God. Of course, the little kids wouldn't understand that, and neither would anybody if one didn't think quick. What did the writers think?! Hoodie 11:27, 9 April 2006 (UTC)
