John Rylands Library

edit

Is JRL really within the Spinningfields area? I would place it nearly 2 miles from Hardman Square. J G M Arnold 22:32, 25 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

My mistake. I didn't realise the John Rylands Library was different to the John Rylands University Library. J G M Arnold 22:35, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

Images

edit

There is a guideline which says images should not be on the top left of a section; I forgot to note in edit summary that this was being changed here.--Felix Folio Secundus (talk) 18:03, 14 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

There seem to be too many images in this article: it would be more useful to have a simple map of the existing buildings and some of these images.-Felix Folio Secundus (talk) 20:27, 20 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

History

edit

Planning to make some changes to the page to reflect the history of Spinningfields. Spinningfields takes its name from a road appearing on the current site. It appears on the 1850 Ordinance Survey map between what is now Wood Street and Hardman Street leading to a "Hide and Skins" yard. The true historic tone of the area is dominated by the wood street mission, established at it's current site on wood street in 1873. When the mission was established "a senior police officer described the area around Wood Street as "a den of iniquity"' c/o (the guardian) and was dominated by gin, ale and opium houses. Working with the homeless in this area it is a reputation still relevant to this day (though being a subculture reference, references in the literature are lacking). Spinningfields was lost in the slum clearances of the 1960s though remained in a truncated form until the recent redevelopment. — Preceding unsigned comment added by RoslinGenetics (talkcontribs) 02:47, 14 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
