Talk:Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Philippines

Any errors? Pls fix. Thanks. :) --Noypi380 01:04, 10 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure, but one of the things that could help improve this article is to give additional information on what the Speaker of the House does (like, background information). I'm tempted to take out my Hector de Leon textbook on the Constitution...but I just came home from work. Maybe that would come later, after I sleep tonight this morning ;-) --- Tito Pao 01:59, 10 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
Hahaha, good idea! But rest first. LOL :) --Noypi380 10:58, 10 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
I suggest the renaming of the article to Speakers of the Philippine Legislature. It must be noted that we had the following legislatures: Philippine Assembly (1907-1916), House of Representatives (1916-1935, 1941-1972, 1987 to present), National Assembly (1935-1941), Batasang Pambansa (1978-1984) — and the presiding officers of these legislature were called Speakers. What about separate articles for those? :) --Noypi380 10:12, 11 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
Removed those who did not serve in the "House of Representatives". --Noypi380 10:27, 11 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
In the House of Representatives itself, it views itself as a single line, institutionally, from the First Philippine Assembly in 1907 and including the National Assemblies under the Commonwealth and Second Republic. I think that's definitive, then. A note can be made that the precursor and successor of the House was the Philippine Assembly and National Assembly, respectively. Also, the same line of Speakers contains the interim and regular Batasan Pambansa. Gareon 16:45, 11 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
Okay, the list must be changed then. :) --Noypi380 03:46, 12 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
And Scorp suggested to rename the article, so the title can change too. :) --Noypi380 03:54, 12 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yes, that might make more sense!Gareon 04:59, 12 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
Scorp, rename is a go, but dunno how to fix the list. :) --Noypi380 05:45, 12 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
I'd rather rename it to "Speakers of the lower house of the Philippine legislature". --Howard the Duck
Hmmm. What about keeping the current title, since that is the name of the current body with its speaker. And then, have a second list in this page that has the heads of the other entities that came before the House of Representatives. So there would be two lists here, the post-1907 list for the "Speakers for the House", and then another list for the 2nd, 4th republic Speakers of their Assemblies. Compromise on that?--Noypi380 09:03, 14 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
If you say, Speakers of the lower house of the Philippine legislature, it will not be applicable when we had a unicameral legislature: the National Assembly from 1935-1941 and the Batasang Pambansa (Interim and Regular) these didnt have an upper house. I think it will be politically more appropriate if we just use Speakers of the Philippine legislature as it encompasses all phases of our legislature, as we always had the position of Speaker, regardless of the name and structure our legislature assumed. Scorpion prinz 16:46, 14 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
Now that you said that, I'd rather leave it here. The Department of National Defense isn't divided into "Ministry of Defense," etc. --Howard the Duck 03:40, 15 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
I think for the department of Justice, they have it noted, whether they were called Secretary/Minister/Commissioner. They can assume that, it will be the closest. For this one, there is a rather more appropriate term, hence it will be nicer to use that. Scorpion prinz 03:52, 15 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
I guess "lower house" won't be wrong since if the Congress is unicameral, then it is understood that the lower house exists while the upper house is abolished? --Howard the Duck 04:09, 15 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
What about the first suggestion? To keep the current title, since that is the official title today. Those who have different titles will be mentioned, but clarified. :) --Noypi380 06:42, 15 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
Lets put on the lead the clarifications, and put everyone that was a speaker in any spell of the legislature. --Howard the Duck 09:11, 15 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
Okay, what about you scorp? --Noypi380 14:34, 15 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
If we were to use the argument of the Ministry/Defense departments, these were just renamed and their structure didnt change, except of course ministers became members of parliament. However the offices were the same. For the Speakership, it changed in structure. I stick to my position, it will be most appropriate to have them Speakers of the Philippine Legislature/s. If i may add, its also the reason why there is the published book Speakers of the Philippine Legislature by Corazon Paras, who also authored the Presidents of the Senate, Chief Justices/Justices of the Supreme Court. Scorpion prinz 05:42, 17 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
How about retaining the name while explain that the article includes other Speakers in other chambers. Are they considered in one constitutional line? --Howard the Duck 08:11, 23 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
From what I know, they are not. The current constitutional line of the current speaker is the Osmeña line dating back to 1907. And then there is the Makalintal-Yñiguez line, and then there is just Aquino. :) --Noypi380 13:47, 26 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
Reindent: How about adding eras and terms just like in the List of Presidents of the Philippines? --Howard the Duck 08:30, 6 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Good idea. :) --Noypi380 04:10, 20 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
I'll be doing that... anybody know their districts? --Howard the Duck 13:57, 6 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
