"Splintering"?

edit

In warfare, would splintering be the same thing as spalling?

Because in the 18th Century, when the Wooden Hull of a Warship was hit by Solid Shot, the damage creates a jet of splinters which can cause injury, infection, and death. --Arima (talk) 19:21, 1 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

"Spalling" appears to be a fancy word for "Shattering". "Splintering" would be a subset of it, since it implies a wooden structure. In the interests of wikipedia supposedly being a non-specialised encylopedia for the layman, I suggest the first sentence should be a description/definition similar to this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 144.138.140.227 (talk) 06:38, 6 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

2017: Bal maidens image's site info

edit

To editor Felix Folio Secundus and any other interested editors: Thanks for the image above! ... I just realized that I hadn't actually read the article, so I don't know if bal maidens are discussed in it yet or not. It looks like the image itself has not been included, at any rate, from what I saw on its info page.

Speaking of its File info page, I expanded its description to include links to other parts of the website, so that it is easier to understand the context of the image compared to when the page only had a direct link to the image itself.

It would be good to find the actual name of the "paper by James Henderson" within the Proceedings... but I didn't have the wherewithal due to my real-life limitations.

Here is the improved version of the description: Bal Maidens Spalling Ore, from the Bal Maidens & Mining Women Home Page. Similar images available at the site's Bal Maidens Picture Gallery. |Source=Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers, paper by James Henderson |Date=1858

Hopefully, something on that website will lead someone to make sure this piece of female and mining history is covered in the appropriate places on Wikipedia. Thanks in advance! —Geekdiva (talk) 11:21, 2 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

mercury

edit

It seems that the Spallation Neutron Source uses mercury, so the article needs to generalize from uranium. Gah4 (talk) 09:52, 16 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
