5E1 Series 1 build locations

edit

Not all 135 of these locos were built at Bowesfield Works in Stockton. 35 were built at Metro-Cammell's Old Park Works in Wednesbury. I believe the Wednesbury locos were E464 - E498, i.e. the last 35 in the series.

Official publicity pics of a complete E464, plus others part-built, at Old Park are published in John Boynton's book "A Century Of Railways Around Birmingham & The West Midlands: Volume Two 1948 - 1972" (ISBN 0952224852), and are also on Flickr at [1]https://www.flickr.com/photos/124446949@N06/50628135756 and [2]https://www.flickr.com/photos/124446949@N06/50628135711

The Old Park locomotives are also referenced in the two Met-Camm publicity posters at the bottom of the page at [3]http://www.historywebsite.co.uk/articles/Wednesbury3/page1.htm

I have also seen photos of two of these locos being towed out of Wednesbury Exchange Sidings and through Wednesbury Town station, although I can't upload these shots as I don't have the copyright.

Note that the original version of the Wiki article on Bowesfield Works states that 100 5E1s were built there, which I suspect has probably come from the quoted reference "Industrial Railway Record 148" (Darvill, March 1997), although I have no copy of that magazine to confirm. Someone has subsequently amended this to 135, which is in error I believe. BS08294 (talk) 16:49, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
