The Silmarils and the Sampo edit
Why is there no mention in this article of the similarity between the Silmarils and the Sampo from the Finnish Kalevala? It is well documented that the Kalevala was a huge influence on Tolkien and much has been said of the similarities between Túrin Turambar and Kullervo, but the obvious connection between the Silmarils and Sampo isn't mentioned anywhere. – Dyolf87 (talk) 16:51, 12 June 2023 (UTC)
- As you say, Tolkien scholars have long discussed the connections, and these are mentioned in several Middle-earth articles. I'll take a look at the scholarly literature again on this aspect. Chiswick Chap (talk) 17:42, 12 June 2023 (UTC)
- I've added a bit of the scholarship on the question. It actually points up what a curious symbol a Silmaril is, full of holy light yet creating an unholy mess. Interesting, thank you. Chiswick Chap (talk) 18:49, 12 June 2023 (UTC)
