Title should be John Shaw Nielson
editThe title of this article is 'Shaw Neilson', it should be his full name 'John Shaw Neilson'.----Design (talk) 07:04, 23 March 2016 (UTC)
- Why? He was known simply as "Shaw Neilson". We don't have "Edward Gough Whitlam" or "John Malcolm Fraser" or "James Earl Carter" or "George Walker Bush". -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 07:10, 23 March 2016 (UTC)
- My answer is: writers may be known by their surnames (Wordsworth, Burns), but their article on Wikipedia is titled with their full name, with a redirect from their shorter name. Also he is known as John Shaw Neilson in published biographies and collections of his works for the last 50 years (refer to the bibliography in the article). His friends and family called him John or Jock. He initally used "Shaw Neilson" in the early 20th c to distinguish himself from his father, who had also had some verses published. ----Design (talk) 07:23, 23 March 2016 (UTC)

The Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Biographies states "While the article title should generally be the name by which the subject is most commonly known, the subject's full name, if known, should be given in the lead sentence", so I think the issue here is that we do not currently have a consensus on Neilson's "most commonly known" name.----Design (talk) 03:13, 25 March 2016 (UTC)
- Of the poetry books published in his lifetime, some used "Shaw Neilson", some used "John Shaw Neilson". Of the biographies published since his death, the majority use "John Shaw Neilson".----Design (talk) 06:30, 25 March 2016 (UTC)
- I'm late to this discussion but I'd opt for "John Shaw Neilson". Austlit has him listed that way. Perry Middlemiss (talk) 06:18, 27 June 2016 (UTC)
