Rivette "Secret Defense" edit

This is an important film, recognised as based on the story of the Greek mythological figure Elektra, daughter of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra, and treated by Aeschylus. It includes a remarkable performance by Sandrine Bonnaire. Arguably it also reflects current feminist debate about the figure of Clytemnestra. Since Rivette is known to have based his film productions in part at least around improvisation with his actors and cameraman - which relates to his typical mode of narrative centred around theatrical rehearsal - from which this film departs - this re-imagined and disrupted (at the end Elektra, who has dismissed Orestes from his caim to the role of avenger, is trying to save, not kill Aegisthus) re-enactment in late twentieth century Parisian terms of almost the first surviving Classical tragedy is of considerable interest. I hope somebody in the French Cinema Task Force knows more than this and is working on something better than the current Wikipedia entry. Delahays (talk) 08:26, 18 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
