There is lively debate among genealogists as to whether Capt Samuel Matthews was Governor or if it was his son, Colonel Samuel Matthews who was Governor of Virginia. They were both in government service to the crown at the same time. I believe that archeological work is taking place to see if they lived in the same home. They both died within a few years of each other.
