Magical artifact

edit

This article had earlier linked the phrase "magical artifact" to Artifact (fantasy). This was changed by WeniWidiWiki to Artifact (archaeology). I reverted this because I believed artifacts from mythology (or religion, for that matter) that haven't been proven to exist shouldn't be considered archaeological items. After a brief discussion with WeniWidiWiki, I reverted my own reversion because (A) the "fantasy" article is about fantasy gaming, which is not at all relevant; and (B) the "archaeology" article says nothing about proving that such an artifact exists, only that it was human-made. Although the Sampo's creator, Ilmarinen, is an immortal, I will concede the point unless and until we come up with an article on religious-mythological artifacts, at which point I would agree with WeniWidiWiki's suggestion (based on my edit, not necessarily his/her own view) that Ark of the Covenant, the True Cross and the Holy Grail also point to this new article. (The last three are actually human-crafted, but I still think they could be more usefully grouped into this new classification with Sampo.) ~ Jeff Q (talk) 05:29, 22 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

I suggest that Sampo actually is the Nebra Sky Disk discovered in Germany. By reading the Sampo chapter of Kalevala (I used the original Finnish edition), you can find striking description how Ilmarinen makes the object. One could imagine that Sampo was placed on top of a pole and used for the purposes as described for the Nebra Sky Disk. A textbook example of WP:Original Research from 2006. Of course nobody would dare to propose such a thing nowadays. Chiswick Chap (talkcontribs) 6:00, 8 August 2023 (UTC)

Portrayal in Film: Jade Warrior

edit

Someone should do a writeup of Sampo as it's portrayed in the 2006 film, Jade Warrior. Boter 03:28, 31 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

A brand of diverse products?

edit

"There is a Finnish brand of diverse products which is called Sampo."

I'm from Finland and I can't remember "a brand of diverse products", I can only remember a bank. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Seko (talkcontribs) 17:13, 3 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Elmer Fudd, What's Opera, Doc?, Warner Bros. Cartoons

edit

Uncited, moving here to Talk for now:
"In the Warner Brothers cartoon What's Opera, Doc?, Elmer Fudd sings, "Yes, magic helmet. And I'll give you a Sampo", mispronouncing "sample" but smiling knowingly at the camera to reveal the inside joke."
- I am skeptical that this was knowingly intended as a reference to the Sampo. Can we cite this? -- 201.37.230.43 (talk) 00:18, 15 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

- To me, Fudd does not seem to smile knowingly at the camera at all —Preceding unsigned comment added by 110.33.216.161 (talk) 05:28, 28 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

If you know what sampo is

If you know what sampo is, write it down on a piece of paper and throw it away and try not to think about it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.53.74.146 (talk) 17:00, 19 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

The Sampo, as a mill that produced gold from thin air appeared in a german mickey mouse magazine. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.91.131.52 (talk) 12:36, 6 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Maybe this mickey mouse magazine? Saung Tadashi (talk) 02:40, 7 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

It also appears in an Uncle Scrooge comic book done by Don Rosa which is directly based on Kalevala. Saung Tadashi (talk) 02:40, 7 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Sampo = Cornucopia

edit

This is Lönroths creation. The original mythos do not contain description what Sampo actually it. I did not put this to the article, because I found no reference about this. --JK — Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.184.83.230 (talk) 10:58, 12 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

It's a McGuffin

edit

Whether it's a talisman or cornucopia or whatever doesn't actually matter. It's a desirable object that provides motivation for characters to take action. A McGuffin.
