edit

At the moment this is not an article about Sai, it's a retelling of the current arc in the manga. Many other Naruto articles are written this way too, unfortunately. Please revise -- this is an article about a character, not the narrative. --Lionelster 03:31, 12 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Well, its a synopsis of the sections of manga which Sai has taken a part of. What else would we put in his article? Maybe if it were separated a bit better, the page would look better. --GhostStalker 05:14, 12 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Anyone else think that Sai might be a homosexual, considering the way he sees women? And mentions male genitals often? Oh, and just to make this clear, I'm making an observation, and not trying to be offensive.--Vercalos 21:05, 6 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
I doubt it. He seems to just be a poor (extremely so) conversationalist. Probably had a messed-up childhood. – Someguy0830 (Talk | contribs) 21:13, 6 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
Well, he honestly finds women unattractive, from what I've seen in the mangas myself.. It could just be the training he had as a child to detach himself from others. Then again, it could be possible that he is homosexual.. It's unusual, but he wouldn't be the first homosexual character in a manga or anime.--Vercalos 09:18, 8 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
I doubt he's a homo. 1. He's been trained to be unemo. 2. His constant references to dicks is just like dudes refer to it in real life: Insulting someone by telling them it's small or not special. 3. The way he sees women is a result of not knowing how people normally react to what. His vision of reaction is this: call Sakura a hag and she'll do absolutey nothing and take it. He doesn't know this yet, 'cause no one's told him, or they just think he has the common sense to avoid these things. 4. He first learned about emos, conversations, and making good impressions from a book. Not a good start. Lol. The Wretched 06:58, 9 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
Well, with Ino, he thinks, and says the opposite of what he thinks she looks like..--Vercalos 04:02, 17 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
Most the of context deals with the plot not Sai specifically. It should be changed to reflect Sai as a character not his role in the storyline. Karma Thief 02:21, 10 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Should Sai be classified as a good guy at the bottom of the page as opposed to an enemy, or should we wait for events to further unfold in case he defects again? SpionKop 00:24, 21 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think we should wait until further events play out. Maybe move him to Neutral? --GhostStalker 13:19, 21 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Sai has been revealed as a "good guy" in 310, so he should be removed from Enemies. --Vinay P. 19:49, 8 June 2006 (UTC) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 66.234.217.131 (talkcontribs) 02:49, 9 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Asperger's

edit

Would it be safe to state in the trivia section of this article that Sai desplays tendencies similar to those of someone with Asperger's syndrome? For instance, his inability to outwardly express emotion and his habit of speaking rudely toward those around him without being aware that his comments are seen as socially inappropriate. Would listing this be regarded as speculation or not, as several fictional characters from other series appear to have psychological disorders that are inferred but never directly adressed, and yet it is listed on their page that thier behaviors infer a disorder.--66.24.229.7 17:27, 29 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

It seems more like Sai's trained that way than it actually being a mental disorder...--Vercalos 07:29, 30 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
Sai does show characteristics of Asperger syndrome, being as I have the syndrome too. It is not something that can be learned that easliy. It would most likely be the best to say he might have Asperger syndrome instead of ignoring the possiablity. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 65.81.245.142 (talkcontribs) .
No it wouldn't. Saying that he has or might have that syndrome is speculation, which does not belong. The chances of the series actually saying outright that he has Asperger's syndrome are remote at best. – Someguy0830 (Talk | contribs) 02:51, 15 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps it would make sense to state tht his behaviors mirror Asperger's syndrome, not to assume that he actually has it.66.24.229.233 01:08, 17 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
He was actually trained to act the way he does. That's how the creator of the series made him and not because he has some sort of mental dysfunction. --64.14.194.26 20:04, 18 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Note however, that the initial post states that Sai has traits similar to asperger's syndrome, not that he actually has the disorder itself. Perhaps the similarity should at least be stated, even if there is no consensus as to whether or not he has said disorder. 66.24.236.62 02:13, 14 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

It's a learned behavior. It may be hard for a ten year old to learn the traits, but it would be much easier to learn it at three. Take Sousuke Sagara from Full Metal Panic. He has trouble with social skills, because he was raised from toddler to adult as a mercenary. NinjaPirates!!!

Is the Rank Root or ANBU

edit

Ok, I changed the rake from ANBU to Root, and then someone changed it back to ANBU. I get why it was done (Roots isn't a Rank), but I don't think that Sai is in ANBU. I know Root used to be part of ANBU, and Sai is inside Root, but since Root was disbanded, that doesn't necessarily mean Sai is in ANBU. Also, now that Root doesn't officially exist, Sai would have to report to the Hokage if he was an official member of ANBU. And we know he doesn't do that, so he can't be a official ANBU member. And since ANBU is not listed as an Official rank, but as an organization, like Root, I believe Sai should be called Root or unknown. I've read the whole manga (yes, I know that's original research, but I can just come of with some things to site later) so unless I missed some external source, I believe that it was never told directly to you. This article doesn't site it's sources (hint hint) so unless there was something info book on Sai that I missed, I think that this is more or less up for discussion. JLAF 07:04, 11 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Root is a division of ANBU, secret or not, so Sai is a member of ANBU. – Someguy0830 (T | C) 07:08, 11 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
I don't see how something could be a division of ANBU if ANBU doesn't know it exists anymore.JLAF 16:59, 11 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

ANBU root is in large part a training program that trains orphans for ANBU-style missions from childhood. ANBU implies that a ninja has reached a certain level, all ANBU root implies is that a kid was an orphan and taken into the program. The two are markedly different, and assuming that everyone in ANBU root has the same rank as someone in ANBU itself doesn't make sense. There is no discernable difference between what Sai is now and what he was as a small child, so you can't say he's a full-fledged ANBU member. You should fully write out "ANBU Root" under rank. 69.177.144.165 21:40, 11 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

WHY do people use present tense AND past tense?!

edit

The whole point of my editing everything into past tense was to remove sentences where people MIXED past and present tense! Yet, some bozo edited the present tense back in and now there's STILL tons of places where both tenses are used! --FallenAngelII

Writing about fiction should always be done in the present tense. --Pentasyllabic 13:42, 15 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sai idea origin

edit

Just so you guys know where the inspiration for Sai's creation, check out these links: http://www.topics-mag.com/folk-tales/folk-tale-good-greed-ch.htm http://www.amazon.co.uk/Magic-Paintbrush-Julia-Donaldson/dp/0333964438 http://www.amazon.com/Liang-Magic-Paintbrush-Reading-Rainbow/dp/0805008012

That means nothing. Tons of stuff can be compared to old folklore lots of people hae forgotten. Kishimoto's Japanese, not Chinese. Unless he says "I looked into Chinese myths for the creation of Sai (which I very much doubt)", I'm not buying it. --FallenAngelII
Much of Japanese folklores either come from China or based off of Chinese folklores. Take a look into Journey to the West as an example. Early Chinese migrated to Japan and took their culture with them. This is rather unfamiliar for Japanophiles, but what can you say about them? They are so blinded by their love for Japan that they took all Japanese culture to be original and unique.
And by the same token, I suppose you're a Sinophile or something? Just because there is a resemblance doesn't mean there has to be a connection. --Pentasyllabic 02:53, 19 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
Then you can say: just becaues the sun is bright does not mean it is extremely hot. Or, just because there are fossils does not mean dinosaurs once walked the earth. You lack logic in you argument.
You lack both logic and grammar in yours. I could say just because the sun is bright it's not hot. How do I know otherwise? Because there's proof to the contrary. Where's your proof? All you have is conjecture. – Someguy0830 (T | C) 03:10, 19 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
Ha, you make me laugh. I will not argue this any longer for it is pointless.
OK. I, personally, am willing to admit there is a possible(even probable) connection between Chinse Folkore and Sai, and the original Dragonball was heavily based on Journey to the West, if not by admission, then by similarities between a great many characters.. But unfortunately, unless the author of Naruto himself comes forward and admits that he based some of his material on Chinese folklore, All they can be is theories, and generally, theories don't belong on Wikipedia(Unless it's notable in and of itself, like the Theory of Relativity). So please, stop being rude and uncivil. it's not doing anything but irritating people. Feel free to present more proof if you find any, but don't attack those that disagree with you. --Vercalos 00:59, 20 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
Please, allow me to cite a part of Sarutobi (3rd hokage)'s article "Many aspects of his character are borrowed from the Chinese literature classic Journey to the West; the monkey he summons bears a very strong resemblance to Sun Wukong, the protagonist of the Journey to the West, and Sarutobi's chosen weapon is identical to Monkey's magical staff." ... Now then, what was that about Kishimoto not involving Chinese folklore? Actually, Kishimoto isn't the least bit original... Naruto's signature move is cloning. Yeah, we've NEVER seen a ninja do that before (sarcasm), the bijuu monsters are inspired by east-asian folklore (in Korean lore, the Kitsune, or "Kumiho", is purely depicted as a manevolent creature), and Orochimaru, Jiraya, and Tsunade are, over-obviously, inspired by "Jiraiya Goketsu Monogatari". The chances of Sai being a through and through original character are close to non-existant, imo. 217.208.27.4 23:55, 14 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Why is everyone arguing? Why all the smart answers and witty remarks? I mean really, just because someone is asking about Chinese folklore, doesnt mean he is a Sinophile. Because whoever said that would be a "Japanophile" for sitting here arguing about Japanese manga chracters. So whoever that was needs to stop with the names. I mean, do you realize you are sitting here arguing about a manga chracter? This is supposed to be a place where you discuss ideas for the article, not throw around your well written sarcastic little comments that are irrelevant to the topic. C'mon, its kind of annoying.

sai theory of life

Origin of Sai's Name

edit

Do you think that it should be noted that his name probably originates from that of Kirigakure Saizō, the legendary ninja who was supposedly the arch-rival of Sarutobi Sasuke? We have made notes about the name origin for Sasuke and Sandaime Hokage (I haven't checked Asuma and Konohamaru), and it seems very liely that this is the origin of Sai's name, given his relationship to Sasuke and his service of Danzo, the (sort of) arch-rival of Sandaime. --Lore_aura

Isn't that just speculation? -- Seraphchoir 14:59, 12 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

I realise alot of seculation is about on these pages and I'll admit I've been a culprit of it before now, but I know that 'Sai' means 'age' in Japanese. HOWEVER, depending on the context of the word I may be wrong. Is it worth looking into it more?(82.20.9.119 20:26, 17 May 2007 (UTC))Reply

There is little ambiguity with synonyms in written Japanese. Since his name is written in katakana, this means we can be fairly confident that it's not meant to be any specific word. To entertain thought, however, here is a list of everything that sai can mean in Japanese:
さい (sai)
  1. 歳: age, year, old
  2. 犀: rhinoceros
  3. 差異: 差違: diversity, difference
  4. 際: when, in case of
  5. 才: talent, ability
  6. 再: re-
List taken from Wiktionary:さい. –Gunslinger47 22:53, 17 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

His name is also the name for a type of weapon used in some Martial Arts, with origins in the Okinawa Prefecture. They're knives like Elektra's. However Sai isn't even his real name, it was given to him by ROOT so who knows, his real name may yet be to come (82.20.9.119 15:32, 18 May 2007 (UTC))Reply

Yes, Sai (weapon) (釵). –Gunslinger47 15:57, 18 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

It also means coloring which i think might work. (彩) Anubisus 03:07, 2 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sai's Brother

edit

in chaper 310 there is a really good pic of his brother, and since his brother doesn't have his own bio, shouldn't there be a pic of his brother on his page. just a suggestion but i think that it should --Allen Walker

Good find; I'd forgotten that his brother was ever shown. Still, if his picture were to be shown anywhere, it should be in his own entry. Were he to get an entry, it would be on Land of Fire, though I'm not really sure he's important enough to need it. ~SnapperTo 19:45, 1 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

he isn't important enough(( not to mention a lack of info)) to have his own, thats why i thought the pic of sais brother should be on sai page, but thats just what i think --Allen Walker 11:25, 18 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

The episode begins in media res during Sasuke's confrontation with Naruto's team. During that sequence, Sai is clearly seen, as evinced by the picture in the article. Sephiroth BCR (Converse) 04:08, 26 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Main Page

edit

Ok why should Sai be able to have a main page if most of the Konoha 11 can't? I think we could make a longer more detailed main page for Kiba, Choji, or someone else than Sai's. Besides, some, if not all ninja in the Konoha 11 have had bigger parts in the story than Sai.
